Players that Will Miss out on Euro 2024

The domestic football season has just two weeks to go as the break promises a summer of competitive tournament football. However, some players who have impressed for their clubs won’t be at the European Championships and some may miss out due to injury.

Here’s our list of the biggest players who will be missing out on Euros football this summer.

Erling Haaland (Norway, Manchester City)

Haaland has once again impressed for Manchester City in the Premier League as they are embroiled in another title race. In 28 games, the Norwegian has scored 25 goals and has registered five assists. This means Haaland has a goal every 92 minutes for City and a goal conversion rate of 27%.

In other competitions, Haaland has popped up with eight goals and one assist as City made it all the way to the FA Cup Final and the Champions League Quarter Final.

However, Norway found themselves in a qualifying group with Spain, Scotland, Georgia and Cyprus where they finished six points behind the last qualification spot.

Martin Odegaard (Norway, Arsenal)

Much like his country compatriot, Odegaard is also deep in the Premier League title fight. This season for Arsenal in all competitions, Odegaard has picked up 11 goals and nine assists in 46 games.

Odegaard has been one of the biggest play-makers in the Premier League this season, registering eight assists in the league. This has been an impressive showing in an Arsenal side with the best scoring record in the Premier League.

Despite his success for his club, Odegaard was unable to show his strength in a tough qualifying group that saw Norway fail to clinch a spot in the tournament.

Victor Lindelof (Sweden, Manchester United)

Lindelof has been in and out of the team at Manchester United this season, but this has also been due to injury. Lindelof has only played 19 games in the Premier League this season and is currently out with a thigh injury.

However, Lindelof would’ve been able to return to international football had Sweden qualified. Since 2016, Lindelof has made 66 appearances for Sweden where he has scored three goals.

Sweden were drawn into Group F for the Euro Qualifiers against Belgium, Austria, Azerbaijan and Estonia. In eight games, Sweden picked up just three wins, one draw and four losses, leaving them on ten points, nine points from qualification.

Alexander Isak (Sweden, Newcastle United

Another Swedish Premier League star to miss out on tournament football this summer is Isak. With two games to go in the Premier League, Isak is third in the race for the Golden Boot.

In 27 games in the Premier League, Isak has picked up 20 goals and one assist which gives him a goal every 101 minutes and a goal conversion of 35%.

In all other competitions, Isak picked up four more goals, including one goal in the Champions League against PSG. Isak also scored once in the unsuccessful qualifying campaign.

Evan Ferguson (Ireland, Brighton)

Ferguson has been a bright spark in a season that is somewhat unravelling for Brighton. In 36 games, Ferguson has picked up six goals and one assist, the third most goals for Brighton.

Ireland was drawn into a tough Group B against France, the Netherlands, Greece and Gibraltar. Ireland picked up two wins and six losses, leaving them on six points, 12 points from direct qualification.

However, Ferguson did impress during their qualification campaign, scoring twice across two games against Gibraltar.

Brennan Johnson (Wales, Tottenham)

In his first season with Tottenham, Johnson has broken into the team, scoring five goals and registering eight assists in 31 games. This gives him a goal every 395 minutes and a goal conversion rate of 12%.

Qualifying saw Wales take on Turkey, Croatia, Armenia and Latvia. However, in eight games Wales could only pick up three wins, three draws and two losses, leaving them on 12 points, four from automatic qualification.

Wales did pick up a spot in the Play-offs where they beat Finland 4 - 1 in the Semi Finals but after a 0 - 0 draw against Poland in the Final, Wales lost 5 - 4 on penalties.

Thibaut Courtois (Belgium, Real Madrid)

Courtois could be coming into the European Championships without having played a single game in the domestic season. In pre-season, Courtois suffered an ACL injury.

When the Belgian had recovered from this set-back and returned to training, he picked up another knee injury that required another surgery.

However, Carlo Ancelotti did state that Courtois could return before the end of the season which could set him up for a late return to the Belgium side.

Lucas Hernandez (France, PSG)

The ACL injury to Hernandez came a lot closer to the summer, making him ruled out for France in the Euros. The defender picked up an ACL injury in the first leg of PSG’s Champions League Semi Final against Borussia Dortmund.

Hernandez has made 37 appearances for France, winning the World Cup with Les Bleus in 2018 and finishing as a runner-up in the 2022 World Cup.

Gavi (Spain, Barcelona)

Gavi also suffered an ACL injury this season while playing for Spain on international duty in November. The midfielder had surgery on his knee in November but was said to be out of action for at least ten months.

Since he made his debut for Spain back in 2021, Gavi has picked up 27 appearances and has scored five goals where he helped Spain to their maiden win in the Nations League.

David Alaba (Austria, Real Madrid)

Real Madrid defender David Alaba is a serious doubt for this summer's European Championships which could be a big blow for Ralf Rangnick's Austria side.

The 31-year-old suffered a cruciate ligament tear in Real Madrid's 4-1 home win over Villarreal in the summer and doesn't look like he'll make it back in time to help his national side.

Alaba has made 105 international appearances for Austria while scoring 15 times.
