It’s a massive clash in La Liga on Saturday, as Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid travel to the Nou Camp in order to face Luis Enrique’s Barcelona. It’s the first ‘El Clasico’ since April, which saw ten-man Real Madrid triumph through goals from Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo. It made up for their previous meeting, where Madrid once again had a player dismissed, but were this time defeated as Luis Suarez grabbed a brace, and both Andres Iniesta and Neymar scored to secure the win.

Starting the season with a 6-2 victory over Real Betis, Barcelona looked as strong as ever but have in fact not dominated La Liga as much as usual. September opened with a baffling 2-1 defeat to Deportivo Alaves, who were recently promoted from the Segunda Division in the summer. They also failed to beat Celta Vigo, when their constant attack was too much to handle for Luis Enrique’s side, finishing the game as a shocking 4-3 defeat. Draws to the likes of Malaga and Real Sociedad have also lost Barca some crucial points, which can be damaging to a side who regularly win league titles. The Champions League has been where they’ve displayed their best form, four points clear at the top of their group and winning four out of five games, with their only error coming when visiting former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola at the Etihad, where his Manchester City side beat them 3-1.

It’s been the worst few games of the season for Barcelona, as their loss to Manchester City opened up November, which led to a win over Sevilla before Malaga took a point at Camp Nou. They then once again reacted in Europe with a win over Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic but then drew to Real Sociedad in the league as well as to Segunda Division side Hercules in the fourth round of the Copa del Rey. Their strike-force of Neymar, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi have continued their best form, still giving Barcelona plenty to be happy about. They have a combined twenty-one goals and eleven assists in La Liga alone. Sergi Roberto, who has began playing as a right-back and Brazilian midfielder Rafinha have also been playing important roles in the side.

Following their Champions League win over local rivals Atletico Madrid at the end of last season, Real Madrid came into the current campaign looking eager for more success under former Galactico Zinedine Zidane. They currently sit top of La Liga with ten wins and three draws from thirteen games, six points clear of second place Barcelona. Past seasons have set almost impossibly high standards for the side to live up to, scoring masses of goals against opponents to an extent where they’ve made some Spanish teams look incapable of a response. Zidane’s side haven’t seen a consistent amount of those sorts of performances, but they’ve managed to get the wins they’ve needed, scoring an incredible thirty-six goals in the process.

As time’s gone on, they’ve adjusted more to their new boss’ style. He took over in January, following the shock dismissal of former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez. The Frenchman led the side onto wins in the Champions League and UEFA Supercup, forcing the hand of chairman Fiorentina Perez into trusting him with the club’s future. They’re unbeaten in La Liga, winning their last game 2-1 to Sporting Gijon and thrashing Spanish Third Division side Cultural Leonesa in their most recent game, where a lot of reserve team players were given a run-out. Real Madrid have also shown their usual dominance in Europe, already assured a place in the knockout rounds, only stopped from going top of their respective group through an incredible run of games by Thomas Tuchel’s Borussia Dortmund.
