Checkatrade Trophy B-C Round-Up – 08/11/16

Barnet v Peterborough United

League Two side Barnet face League One’s Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy for what is essentially a dead rubber fixture. Both sides have already been eliminated from the competition after their first two games did not go according to plan. Barnet drew 2-2 in their first match against MK Dons but were beaten on penalties meaning they only took one point before going on to lose 5-0 to a strong Norwich City U21 side. Peterborough meanwhile have lost both of their fixtures in the tournament, going down 6-1 to Norwich and 1-0 to MK Dons. Given that both are already out it is unlikely that their managers will risk any key players so expect rotated sides in this one. It will also probably be treated more like a friendly match with nothing to play for, which could mean that there are a few goals in the game as they look to experiment. We can see a high scoring draw at The Hive.

Blackburn Rovers U21 v Oldham Athletic

It’s been a tough first job in football management for Oldham Athletic gaffer Steve Robinson as his team still sit firmly in the relegation zone, only two points astray from remaining in League Two. They only narrowly avoided relegation last season after John Sheridan came in to save the day in January, before he departed to take over at Notts County at the end of the season. In the current campaign, Steve Robinson’s side have only achieved three wins and six draws from 16 league fixtures and will need a burst of life soon if they wish to remain in the league. October has been a better month for the Latics, winning two of their three wins during the month, but it means very little when the other four fixtures were defeats. Home side Blackburn Rovers are 8th in their respective table but have failed to win in their last five fixtures throughout all competitions. They’ve won three of their nine league games this season but their fortunes haven’t been helped by the sheer amount of away fixtures they’ve had to play this season, winning three at home this season and losing six out of nine away in all competitions.

Chelsea U21 v Oxford United

Chelsea’s under 21 development team haven’t been playing to their high expectations this season and are 7th in their respective league table. They’ve won only two of their nine league fixtures but their ability to hold teams to draw has been crucial to them not dropping to serious low places in table, grabbing a point against five different sides. It’s likely that they would be performing to far betting results if striker Tammy Abraham was still in the side, but he’s busy being a prolific forward on loan at Bristol City. Michael Appleton’s Oxford United have had a mixed set of results since being promoted from League Two last season but would surely be happy enough to finish strong enough to not return to the league below. The U’s are currently 17th in the league, with a view to finishing higher, especially following the confidence boost from their last game, an 5-0 FA Cup first round thrashing of Merstham FC. League One is still set to be a challenge for the side though, winning only two games from their last six.

Crewe Alexandra v Chesterfield

Both sides go into the match following a 1-1 draw they played out with each other in their FA Cup first round meeting on Saturday. Steve Davis’ Crewe Alexandra are 7th in League Two this season following some important wins but their form has dipped substantially of late, winning just one of their five league games throughout October. Their respective league is so tight though that their fortunes can change very quickly, not that they will be concerned based on their likelihood of finishing the season in a play-off place. Strikers Ryan Lowe and Chris Dagnall have been especially important in cup competitions, scoring six goals between them. Chesterfield have had a totally opposite run of form this season, sitting second to bottom of League One for almost the entirety of the current campaign with little sign of life. Their only hope has been through striker Ched Evans who has scored four league goals as well as a goal in a domestic competition, but he has missed some fixtures due to his involvement in a court case. A second chance against Crewe in the Checkatrade Trophy could be a massive confidence boost if they manage to push through a win.

Everton U21 v Blackpool

Goodison Park is the venue for Everton’s under 21 side on Tuesday night as they play host to Gary Bowyer’s Blackpool in the Checkatrade Trophy. Everton U21s are second in their respective table but have certainly had some disappointing losses like the 5-0 loss away at Arsenal and a 6-3 away defeat to Reading. Despite some major slip ups, they’re quite stably sitting at second in the table and are only a point off top place Manchester City. They boast six wins from nine games and could still win the league if City fall to a loss or two, providing the Toffees pick up some consistency. Gary Bowyer is trying to bring some hope to his Blackpool side following on from a tough few years for their fans and relegation in their last campaign. They’re currently 15th in League Two and struggle with winning consecutively but do look more lively and are fighting the fear of sinking to relegation places. Although only winning four league games, they’ve been shown to be strong when holding other sides to draws, with six under their belt. Kyle Vassell has been important in their winning fixtures, scoring eight goals over all competitions.

Luton Town v Millwall

Nathan Jones’ Luton Town are playing above and beyond the call of duty this season, currently in fourth in League Two with an eye on the top two finishing positions, which has been impressive considering they resulted in a mid-table place last season. Their exploits in the league have seen them carry out a seven game unbeaten run which they look likely to continue. Striker Danny Hylton has been a decisive player for the Hatters this season, scoring ten league goals in all competitions. Millwall are 13th in League One following a struggle to keep up to expectations after stumbling in the play-offs at the end of last season. Neil Harris’ side opened up the season with a 3-0 win over Oldham Athletic but have been mostly inconsistent ever since. They are slowly beginning to find the same form that did them so well last season though, winning of their last three of their last five league games. Veteran striker Steve Morison has been important for the Lions and has bagged nine goals and assisted three times, the most of both categories for the club this season.

Brighton and Hove Albion U21 v Leyton Orient

Brighton and Hove Albion’s under 21s side take on Alberto Cavasin’s Leyton Orient at the Falmer Stadium on Tuesday night at both sides have hopes of continuing in the Checkatrade Trophy. Brighton’s U21 side are currently 9th in the respective table and have a massive 10 points between them and top place Swansea City, making things very unlikely for them to push into the top division. They haven’t won in their last four games, drawing each fixture. Most of their results have been similar, with only one league win and six draws out of nine games. Before then, they defeated Nottingham Forest in the Premier League Cup by an amazing seven goals to nil. League Two side Leyton Orient relieved Andy Hessenthaler of his duties late on in September and have had Italian manager Alberto Cavasin in charge over their last few games. He hasn’t had a massive effect though and followed their first win of the season against Hartlepool United with a 2-0 home loss against Crewe in their last game. They will be in great need of some more wins if they wish to stay in the division as they currently are a point from safety.

Cambridge United v Scunthorpe United

Graham Alexander’s high-flying Scunthorpe United travel two hours south to face Shaun Derry’s struggling Cambridge United. After it was assumed that the U’s would be battling for the top spots after finishing 9th last season, they find themselves just a point away from the dropzone and are struggling to keep composed. Despite efforts to turn around their season, they’ve barely made an impact on their opposition but have won two of their four league wins over the last five games. Scunthorpe United have been breathtaking in League One and remain at the top. They’ve been a constant threat to opposition teams, winning ten and drawing four of their 16 fixtures. They are favourites to win the league now and look practically unstoppable. Young striker Josh Morris has been especially important, scoring 14 goals in all competitions. Kevin van Veen has also been helpful to the cause, netting eight times.
