Checkatrade Trophy C-N Round-Up – 08/11/16

Cheltenham Town v Bolton Wanderers

After gaining promotion from the National League, Gary Johnson’s Cheltenham Town haven’t had the best of starts to the season. They are currently 16th in the table after only being able to get three wins from their opening 15 games. Midfielder Billy Waters is their top scorer after netting five times but no player stands out especially stands out in the side. Bolton have been revitalised this season under Phil Parkinson. They’ve performed well, winning nine and drawing four of their 16 league fixtures and currently sit at second in the League One table, only kept down by Scunthorpe United who are three points ahead. If it weren’t for Scunthorpe, it would be fair to say that Bolton would likely be favourites for the title, but they will be happy with their chance of automatic promotion with a second place finish. Young striker Zach Clough has been influential in their success, his five league goals helping them climb the table.

Colchester United v Charlton Athletic

Finishing in an abysmal 23rd position last season, new manager John McGreal has struggled to turn around their mindset of being nervous and unconfident. They’ve now been unable to win in their last eight league games and don’t look capable of pushing through a victory anytime soon. Striker Chris Porter has attempted to help the side with his six league goals but it’s made only a minor difference with them 18th in the League Two table. Charlton Athletic go into the game following a 3-1 victory over top-place Scunthorpe United in the FA Cup and a streak of four league games without a loss. Things started very differently for Russell Slade at the club though with them struggling to settle, meaning they were doomed to start the season toying with the idea of another relegation battle. They have a manager who is experienced in the division though, so things look set to be better to handle the more they adjust to life in the league below.

Derby County U21 v Mansfield Town

Derby County’s under 21s side have struggled this season and are currently 11th in their respective league with only two wins and draws under their belt out of their nine league fixtures. They are unbeaten in their last four games though, drawing away to Sunderland and Chelsea before their last game was a convincing 2-0 home win against Southampton. Mansfield aren’t the first team that springs to mind when thinking of who you wouldn’t want to come up against but they’ve been able to make lives very difficult for their opposition, holding seven teams to draws in the league season, and winning four games. They’re currently 13th in the table and are a mere three points away from the play-off places, which they look likely to reach. A place they definitely need to improve on though, is turning their important draws into even more crucial victories.

Doncaster Rovers v Port Vale

An exciting game on Tuesday night is sure be between mid-table League One side Port Vale who take on League Two title challengers Doncaster Rovers, who face off at Donny’s Keepmoat Stadium. After being relegated in the summer, Duncan Ferguson has altered the side’s mentality and got them fighting for an instant return to their favoured division. They’re currently third in the table and are just four points away from second place Carlisle United. The strike-force of Andy Williams and John Marquis have been especially useful, scoring an incredible seven league goals each. Bruno Ribeiro’s Port Vale will be coming into the game hoping for a morale boost that could help them achieve the play-off place they’ve been dipping in and out of all season. The Valiants are 13th in League One but have played impressively and have the ambition and quality to finish higher. Their only key issue is with keeping cleansheets as most fixtures have seen them fail to keep one.

Exeter City v Swindon Town

Paul Tisdale’s Exeter City host Luke Williams’ Swindown Town as they fight for the chance to continue in the Checkatrade Trophy at St James Park. Exeter City are really struggling this season which has been a big shock after they finished in a respectable 14th place last season. They’ve enjoyed such big wins against some truly top sides but their nine defeats in 15 games shows how much Paul Tisdale’s side are struggling. Swindon Town have had a similar start to the season as they currently 21st in the League One table after losing eight games in their first 16 league fixtures. Only a single point stands between them and safety from the drop zone but even though they can get some convincing wins, they tend to follow it with an immediate defeat or a disappointing draw in a match they were favourites to win. An immense lack of goals has been a major problem for Luke Williams’ side, with them only scoring 15 times, the third worst amount in the league.

Leicester City U21 v Walsall

Leicester City’s under 21 side are 10th in their respective league after only being able to grab two wins and draws from their opening nine league games. They certainly look like they’ve turned round their poor form though when a 4-0 loss to Liverpool appeared to inspire them to better results. Since that categorical loss, they’ve drawn away to Southampton, Manchester City and Chelsea before winning 2-0 and narrowly defeating Reading 3-2. Jon Whitney has been pushing for Walsall to play in a more exciting style this season and it’s clearly worked, with the side 12th in League One and looking likely to finish even higher. They’ve won three of their last five league games but suffered a distressing 1-0 loss to Macclesfield in their first round fixture of the FA Cup at the weekend. Erhun Oztumer has been especially exciting for the Saddlers scoring eight league goals and always looking a threat with his speed and technical ability.

Middlesbrough U21 v Shrewsbury Town

Standing at 11th in their respective division, Middlesbrough’s under 21 team haven’t played up to the high expectations set by their senior team, who have reached the Premier League after gaining automatic promotion from the Championship at the end of last season. Boro U21s haven’t been all that convincing, winning and drawing two out of their opening nine league games. Paul Hurst’s Shrewsbury Town have been really poor this season and have remained at the bottom of the League One table for sometime, looking favourites for relegation to the National League. They are five points away from safety but look nothing like being able to achieve it, even after their impressive 3-0 win over Barnet in the FA Cup last weekend. The league is a different matter entirely as they haven’t won for an abysmal 11 matches and have lost most of those games throughout the poor run of games.

Newport County v AFC Wimbledon

Graham Westley will be hoping to reboot his season against AFC Wimbledon after his Newport County side have been stuck at the bottom of the table for most of the season. They opened up the season with a disappointing 3-2 loss to Mansfield Town and matters have only worsened ever since, now only having two wins from 14 fixtures with little hope of improving any time soon. AFC Wimbledon played Newport County last season but have since been promoted to League One and have made an instant impact, now sitting in stable 9th place and appearing to be hoping to aim even higher. Their last league game was a defeat against third place Bradford City but before then, they were on an unbeaten run of eight league games. Dons manager Neal Ardley has his side only a point adrift from crawling into the play-offs but he will certainly see them finishing there now after working so hard to climb as high up the table as they have.
