Colchester United v Carlisle United Betting Preview – 07/01/17

In our Colchester United v Carlisle United betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Keith Curle’s Carlisle United will be hoping to bounce back after losing at home to Grimsby Town, as they take on John McGreal’s Colchester United at the Colchester Community Stadium. It won’t be an easy game though, as Colchester United have been enjoying some fantastic form and could be the second team in a row to cause an upset for The Cumbrians. Four teams stand between them in the table, with a win for Carlisle lifting them to second, and three points for Colchester pushing them into the play-offs.

Since being relegated from League One at the end of last season, John McGreal has stepped in and turned around their worrying situation, boosting confidence and making them look like a far more stable team compared to the last campaign’s poor run of games, which saw six different managers in charge of the side over the space of ten months. They weren’t enjoying life in League Two as up until mid November, they were going through an appalling ten game winless run before a defeat to fourteenth place Yeovil Town appeared to be the last straw, seeing John McGreal urge his side to better performances, going on to play out their last seven games unbeaten, with six of those matches resulting in a win. Oddly enough, the accolade of top scorer is a draw between striker Chris Porter and defender-come-forward Brennan Dickenson, who both have seven goals.

They kicked off the year with hopes of continuing their exciting run. The U’s went ahead after just ten minutes of play, Owen Garvan’s free-kick floating to the right side of the penalty area, where defender Tom Eastman jumped to head the ball into the far corner of Russell Griffiths’ goal. Colchester kept up their attacking opportunities, with more ambitious set pieces from Owen Garvan looking especially dangerous. Cheltenham’s best attempt was a header from Billy Waters, which Sam Walker stretched to push over the crossbar. John McGreal’s side secured the win with six minutes left to play, knocked the ball around the penalty area before laying the ball off to Ben Dickenson, who smashed a shot into the opposition goal using the outside of his foot, taking their unbeaten streak to seven games.

It’s been a fantastic season for Carlisle United this season, with Keith Curle as the mastermind behind their incredible rise to third place. They finished 2016 unbeaten for seven games but the new year has taken away some momentum, as they lost their first match at home to twelfth place Grimsby Town. It would be expected that they would bounce back in this game, which would likely be the case if it weren’t for Colchester United finding their best form of the season. However it’s looked at, The Cumbrians have enjoyed a brilliant season so far, winning twelve and drawing ten of their first twenty-four games. Their strength in attack has been an undoubtably important factor in their climb up the League Two table, with striker Charlie Wyke earning fifteen goals, helped by midfielder Jason Kennedy also giving the side to a further eleven goals.

When they took on Grimsby Town last Monday, they were the first side to get on the scoresheet, with interplay from Jason Kennedy and Shaun Miller playing the ball into the feet of Charlie Wyke, who made a quick finish into Dean Henderson’s goal. Grimsby came out looking far more ruthless though, with star striker Omar Bogle stomping through The Cumbrians’ defence, with him far too strong for anyone to keep back, leading to a equalising goal from the forward. A corner with fifteen minutes to go had Bogle doubling his tally, scoring an easy header as he was left completely unmarked. Some interesting play between him and Adi Yussuf then completed the game four minutes later, with Yussuf finishing cleanly into Carlisle’s net to embarrass the side to a 4-1 defeat.
