La Liga Betting Preview – 07/01/17
Eibar v Atletico Madrid
The Ipurua Muncipal Stadium plays host to La Liga football in 2017 for the first time as Eibar take on Atletico Madrid. The first part of the season proved to be very successful for Los Armeros with them going into the winter break up in eighth position. Jose Luis Mendilibar’s men are looking a completely different side to the one that finished down in fourteenth position last term and they’ll be quietly confident that they can secure a european place. They’re currently just five points off the pace in the race for the Europa League with their opponents here occupying sixth which adds a little more spice to the fixture.
They’re in a strong position but their current league form coming into this clash isn’t the best. They’re currently three games without a victory and they’ll be eager to get back to winning ways here, but it won’t be easy against this strong Atletico side. However, they do have an excellent record on home soil in La Liga – winning five of their eight games this season, beating beaten just once. Another victory here would be one of the upsets of the weekend in the top flight and they’re certainly capable of pulling it off – but they’ll need the likes of Pedro Leon and former Premier League duo Kiki & Bebe to be at the very top of their game.
It’s safe to say that things haven’t gone to plan for Diego Simeone and his Atletico Madrid side this season and he’ll be hoping the second part of the campaign brings more joy than the first. Los Rojiblancos are currently in sixth position coming out the winter break and they’re already nine points off the pace in the title race behind city rivals Real. At this stage twelve months ago they were ten points better off and joint top of the table which shows how much they’re struggling this time round. They enter this clash in inconsistent form too, they’ve won just three of their last eight games in La Liga and they’re in severe need of a fast start in this one.
Simeone will have a fully fit squad at his disposal here and all his big guns will be raring to go. The likes of Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro have struggled to hit the lofty goalscoring heights that they achieved last summer. They’ve mustered up just twelve league goals between them in La Liga to date but we’re expecting them to come flying out the traps here with Griezmann in particular causing problems. They’ve lost three of their last four away games so Simeone will be demanding a big response here and we can’t see past them getting the three points – they’re available at 10/3 to win with both sides getting on the scoresheet.

Villarreal v Barcelona
Sunday evening sees one of the games of the weekend as Villarreal take on defending champions Barcelona at El Madrigal. The hosts start 2017 up in fourth position and Fran Escriba will be delighted with the progress that his side are making. The Yellow Submarine are in decent form winning their last two La Liga games and a result here would be their best of the season so far. The foundation to their success has been their form on home soil, they’ve been beaten just once in eight games in front of supporters and they’ve scored plenty of goals. Only four sides have hit the back of the net at home on more occasions than Escriba’s men and they’ll fancy their chances of upsetting the odds here against Barcelona.
In Villarreal’s last home game they took on Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid and they produced arguably their performance of the season. They thrashed Los Rojiblancos 3-0 at El Madrigal on an evening that’ll live long in the memory of the clubs supporters. Goals from Manu Trigueros, Jonathan dos Santos & Roberto Soriano sealed the three points for the Yellow Submarine and that win sent out a big statement to their rivals that they mean business. Another one here would see them cut the gap between themselves and Barca in second to just two points – so there’s plenty to play for.
The Champions enter 2017 three points off the pace in the title race and the gap could be stretched to six by the time this one kicks off. Barcelona’s title defence hasn’t gone to plan to date, they’ve dropped points in six games already this season and gone down to a couple of shock defeats. Luis Enrique has already seen his side beaten by Alaves (2-1) & Celta Vigo (4-3) which proves that it’s possible to get a result against them. The Celta Vigo defeat was the most recent one and since going down there, they’ve gone eight games unbeaten. They ended 2016 with comfortable victories over Osasuna (3-0) and city rivals Espanyol (4-1).
Surprisingly what’s cost Barcelona this season has been their form at Camp Nou. They’ve picked up just fifteen points from their opening eight games which is a total bettered by nine other sides, so they’ve had to step up their away performances. No club has picked up more points on the road than Barcelona this season and they’re more than capable of dismantling this Villarreal side on their day. Enrique will have a near full strength side at his disposal for this clash which will mean a return for MSN. The trio haven’t been as prolific as in recent seasons but they’re still unplayable. Messi and Suarez are leading the way in terms of goal scoring with 12 goals a piece and we’re expecting a big second half of the season from each of them. Messi is their talisman and we can see him leading by example here, he’s scored eleven goals in his last ten appearances and we’re backing him to get on the score sheet here (7/8).
