Scottish Football Betting Preview – 17/12/16

Celtic v Dundee

Brendan Rodgers will hope to extend his Celtic side’s dominance over the Scottish Premiership on Saturday, as they host Paul Hartley’s tenth place Dundee at Celtic Park. They’ve been massively dominant over the the league, as with every season, but this time Brendan Rodgers has wanted to better Ronny Deila’s twenty-six wins and eight draws from thirty-eight games, where he finished fifteen points higher than second place Aberdeen. The former Liverpool manager currently has fourteen wins and a draw from fifteen games played, ahead of second place Aberdeen by eleven points.

They were disappointed at the start of the current month, as a draw to Manchester City confirmed their exit from the Champions League, after playing in one of the toughest groups of the tournament. The Buoys were able to win the Scottish League Cup though, defeating challenging Aberdeen in the final at the end of November, where they dominated the game and won by three goals to nil. Summer signing Moussa Dembele has been their best player this season, scoring seven goals in eleven league fixtures as well as three in the Champions League, looking like a big footballing prospect at just twenty-years-old.

It’s going to be a tough test for Dundee, as they currently sit tenth in the table with only one point keeping them away from a drop into eleventh. They have four wins and draws from seventeen games, despite scoring the joint-fourth most goals in the division. Forward Rory Loy has the most goals for the side with three, which doesn’t seem like much but behind him are Mark O’Hara and Paul McGowan who both have two goals each. Celtic beat Dundee before this season, winning by a single goal at the start of October, so they could very well be out for revenge here.

December opened up with a 2-0 defeat to sixth place Kilmarnock before playing their last game at home to seventh place Ross County. It was likely to be a tough game for Dundee but could have been seen as a perfectly good opportunity to stand their ground and show that they aren’t down and out of the division. They spent a lot of the game attacking County, with it looking certain they would eventually break the deadlock. All their chances didn’t count for much though, as they finished the game at a dismal 0-0 draw.

Ross County v Aberdeen

Derek McInnes will be hoping to keep up his fight for a second place finish, as his Aberdeen side take on Jim McIntyre’s Ross County at The Global Energy Stadium. The Staggies are unbeaten over their five league games, starting at the start of November and including an impressive draw at home to newly-promoted Rangers. They also held Rangers to a draw at the Ibrox Stadium, so there’s every chance that they can do the same to Aberdeen, as both those two sides are fighting for a second place position in the table.

They currently have three wins and eight draws from seventeen fixtures in the Scottish Premiership, sat at seventh in the table between Kilmarnock and Hamilton. Tenth place Dundee hosted them in their last game, where The Staggies played out a lot of the match defending against a determined attacking opposition. They managed to keep a clean sheet though, even if it did mean failing to beat a side who were three places and a point below them in the table. Before then, they held fourth place Hearts to a draw, scoring with four minutes to go through a Liam Boyce penalty.

The only team that have stood out has being clearly strong enough to attempt to rival top place Celtic this season has been Aberdeen, who currently sit at third. They have an important game in hand over second place Rangers, which would have them a point behind if they manage to capitalise on it. It’s not to say they haven’t had their poor moments though, such as at the start of December where they could have shown themselves to be stronger from Rangers, who have similarly been battling to be the second strongest team in the division. They conceded twice and were only able to score a late consolation goal, showing their opposition to be the more capable side.

The Dons’ last game was a disappointing 0-0 draw to fifth place St Johnstone, which certainly doesn’t help their hopes of a top two finish. Playing sixth place Kilmarnock before that game saw the side conduct their best performance and score their most goals in a game this season, winning 5-1 against Lee Clark’s side. Adam Rooney, Jonny Hayes and Niall McGinn have the most goals for the side this season, helping the side to twelve goals and bolstering their attack. This game would surely be a good time to boost their hopes of eventually managing to regain their second place position. It won’t be an easy game though, especially as Ross County have English striker Liam Boyce, who has an incredible nine goals this season.
