Celtic v Aberdeen – Betfred Cup Final – 27/11/16

The first piece of silverware on the Scottish football calendar is up for grabs on Sunday as Celtic take on Aberdeen at Hampden Park. This is Brendan Rodgers’ first chance to win get his hands on a trophy since his move north of the border and his new side come into this clash as big favourites. The Bhoys are cruising domestically at the moment and it’s looking like no one can stop them as they look to launch an assault on three fronts this season. Celtic are currently top of the SPL and they’re yet to be beaten in domestic competitions, so the challenge facing Aberdeen is huge.

This game will be a big test of Celtic’s character after suffering disappointment in the Champions League in midweek. Their 2-0 defeat to Barcelona at Celtic Park saw them exit the competition on what was a disappointing evening for the club. But Rodgers’ side have already proven that they’re capable of beating anyone and they have more than enough quality to get the job done. The likes of Scott Sinclair, Tomas Rogic and Moussa Dembele are more than capable match winners and it will take something special from the visitors to stop them winning.

Aberdeen secured their place in the cup final courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Greenock Morton back in late October. The threat Celtic will pose will be significantly higher than that of Morton but Aberdeen have proven they have the ability to grind out results when they need them. The Dons are Celtic’s nearest challengers in the SPL and Derek McInnes’ side have produced some fantastic football this season. They come into this clash fresh picking up a victory over Inverness (3-1) following the international break and they’ll be backed 22000 fans at the home of Scottish football.

The Dons and Celtic have actually already met twice this season in the SPL and it hasn’t ended well for them on each occasion. A 4-1 defeat at Celtic Park in August came before their 1-0 defeat just under a month ago and the Aberdeen fans will be desperate for them to get revenge. But it’s not going to easy, Celtic have the tightest defence in the SPL and in Moussa Dembele they have the tournaments leading scorer. He has four goals in the Betfred Cup and we can see him running riot against The Dons’ back four. He’s priced at 13/10 to get on the scoresheet and Celtic to win which looks like very good value. We can’t see past a Celtic win here and they will be eager to put Wednesday’s disappointment behind them.

Partick Thistle v Rangers – 26/11/16

Saturday’s early kick-off in the SPL sees Partick Thistle host Rangers at the Firhill Stadium. It’s been a tough start to the season for Alan Archibald’s side and if they lose here they could slip to the foot of the table. Last weekends defeat to Motherwell (2-0) was their second in as many games and it was a game they never really got a foothold in. And things won’t get any easier when they take on Mark Warburton’s Rangers. The Jags have picked up just six points from their opening seven league games which is the third lowest total in the division.

The Jags’ poor home record has seen them win just once at the Firhill Stadium this season and that came way back on match day one. It appears that there’s something of a block that hits them when they play homes on home soil and they need to turn that form round soon if they’re to climb back up the table. If they’re to do that then they’ll need their forwards to start chipping in with more goals. Steven Lawless, Kris Doolan and Adebayo Azeez  have scored just four goals between them this season and it’s an area that’s really costing them points.

Rangers make the short trip to Partick seven places and ten points above their opponents. Mark Warburton’s men are in third position coming into the weekend and with second placed Aberdeen not in action this weekend it gives them a great opportunity to leapfrog The Dons and turn up the heat on leaders Celtic. Rangers are in good form at the moment and their travelling fans will be confident they can get the job done. The Gers have won four of their last six which includes a 1-0 victory over Dundee last Saturday courtesy of a late winner from Harry Forrester.

But something which will concern Rangers supporters is their away form. They’ve seen their side win just two of their six league outings this season and it’s an area they need to improve in their to sustain a challenge on leaders Celtic. If they’re to do that they’ll need to improve their touch in front of goal – similar to their opponents. Andy Halliday, Harry Forrester, Joe Garner & Kenny Miller are all tied three goals and their lack of a prolific scorer has cost them in tight games. Someone who has the potential to be that man is Joe Garner, he has an excellent goalscoring record from his time at Preston and Nottingham Forest in the Football League and we can see him causing plenty of problems here. He’s priced at 6/4 to score anytime which looks like decent value and we’re expecting his team to pick up the three points here (priced at 5/6).
