Fiorentina v Napoli – 22/12/16

In the most enticing Thursday night fixture in Serie A, Maurizio Sarri’s Napoli will be hoping to get a fourth consecutive league win when they make a visit to Paulo Souza’s Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

After an impressive fifth place finish last season under Paulo Souza, Fiorentina are reaching similar heights this time around, currently eighth with a more than likely chance of getting the results to finish higher. They narrowly lost their first game away to Juventus but were unbeaten for their next four games, holding AC Milan to a draw and defeating Roma in the process. To their credit, they’ve also been trying to maintain a worthwhile Europa League campaign, where they’ve made it to the knockout stages after finishing top of their group.

Despite their league position and some really important victories, they have shown some signs of being inconsistent which has held them back in some stages of the season. They won their first two league games of the month, grabbing wins over Palermo and Sassuolo, before losing to twelfth place Genoa. Fourth place Lazio hosted them in their last game, where they couldn’t keep up with their opposition, falling to a disappointing 3-1 defeat. Striker Nikola Kalinic has been superb this season with his eight goals, also pushing the side to their success in Europe.

Many worried over what would become of Napoli after star striker Gonzalo Higuain was bought by Juventus for an Italian record breaking transfer fee. Ajax striker Arkadiusz Milik signed in his place and has been part of a new Napoli side that have been fighting as hard as ever, currently third with a likely battle on the cards between them and Roma for second place. It’s been a big help to the side that Maurizio Sarri has been able to keep hold of attackers Dries Mertens, Jose Callejon, Marek Hamsik and Lorenzo Insigne, as they’ve been as in form as ever, making it hard to belief that their best player ever left.

Dries Mertens has really stepped up to the plate this season, scoring ten goals and also being a regular performer in their Champions League campaign, where they’ve moved into the knockout stage after finishing top of their group. They played host to Torino in their last game, where it opened up with an incredible hattrick from Mertens, who netted all three in the space of seven minutes. Torino replied with two goals in the second half before Mertens scored a fourth and former Tottenham Hotspur Vlad Chiriches also got on the scoresheet. Iago Falque, also formerly of Tottenham, netted a late penalty, but it was too late, as Napoli won 5-3.
