Sheffield Wednesday v Huddersfield Town Betting Preview – 14/01/17

In our Sheffield Wednesday v Huddersfield Town betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

There’s a Yorkshire derby at Hillsborough on Saturday which sees Sheffield Wednesday take on Huddersfield Town. The hosts come into this clash after being dumped out the FA Cup at the hands of Middlesbrough and Carlos Carvalhal’s men are in need of a victory here. The Owls are without a win in three in all competitions and they could drop outside the play-offs if they fail to pick up maximum points here. Huddersfield make the short trip to Sheffield four points and two places above their rivals. David Wagner’s men are enjoying a fantastic season and they’re currently on an eight game unbeaten run.

Sheffield Wednesday enter match day 26 up in sixth position and this clash represents a big opportunity for them to go on and make up some ground on their rivals. Derby are leading the chasing pack behind them and they’re just two points away from The Owls, so a positive result here is essential. Before drawing their last two outings, they were on a good run of form winning five out of six. Those two stalemates have seen them lose ground slightly on their rivals and they’re now ten points away from automatic promotion. The last time Wednesday were in action they made the trip to the Riverside to take on Premier League Middlesbrough and things didn’t end well. The Owls created some decent opportunities against Aitor Karanka’s men and despite edging most the stats, they went down 3-0 to Boro.

It was a disappointing afternoon for Carlos Carvalhal, he opted to play a strong side but unfortunately they couldn’t get the job done so an improvement is needed here. And they’ll fancy their chances of returning to winning ways, their home form has been impressive this season with just four teams taking more points picking up more points than them. And it’s not hard to see why, they have a squad packed full of quality and one man in particular epitomises what they’re all about. Fernando Forestieri is undoubtedly their biggest threat going forward and when he’s on form he’s unplayable. He’s hit six goals this season which includes the winner in the reverse fixtures and we can see him netting here.

Huddersfield arrive at Hillsborough in fine form and David Wagner’s men are loving life at the moment. The Terriers are currently up in fourth position and they’re having a season to remember. Town were expected to struggle by many back at the start of the campaign but they’ve surprised everyone by being in the top six for the majority of the year. And they come into this clash on their longest unbeaten run of the season that currently stands at eight games in all competitions. They were last in action on Saturday when a rotated Town side thrashed League One Port Vale at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Huddersfield rolled out 4-0 winners against The Valiants and it sets them up nicely for this one, but the challenge that Wednesday will pose will be significantly greater than the one they faced on Saturday. But if Huddersfield’s recent performances are anything to go by then they will have a great chance of getting a result here. They’ve won five of their last six Championship games which includes victories over Norwich City (2-1), Bristol City (2-1) & Nottingham Forest (2-1) – so it’s certainly not outside their capabilities to leave Hillsborough with a win. They’re a strong side on their travels which is backed up on the table, with just two sides picking up more points than them on the road.

With both of these sides looking to close the gap on the automatic promotion places, this Yorkshire derby is huge. Sheffield Wednesday have home advantage and they’ll be roared on by a bumper crowd at Hillsborough, but they face a Huddersfield side that is very good away from home. The Terriers have proven already this season that they’re capable of upsetting the odds on the road, with wins over Leeds (1-0) & Newcastle (2-1) particularly eye catching. It’s going to be a close game so we’re backing this one to end as a draw – which is available at a big 23/10.
