Southend United v Sheffield United Betting Preview – 07/01/17

In our Southend United v Sheffield United betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

League One leaders Sheffield United will look to further extend their lead at the top of the table when they travel to Roots Hall on Saturday. The Blades take on another team in excellent form in Southend United however and it could be an intriguing game between two sides who are flying at the moment. Southend come into this one having claimed a 0-0 away draw at Swindon Town last time out, whilst Sheffield United secured a 3-1 victory at Gigg Lane against struggling Bury on Monday.

Southend come into this game bang in form and they have managed to get themselves into play-off contention. After a difficult start to the campaign the Shrimpers have really turned their season around and have now gone 13 matches unbeaten in League One, winning seven of those. That has left them sitting in seventh place in the table, just a single point off the top six and this weekend presents an opportunity for them to jump into the top six with some of their rivals not featuring in the league due to being involved in the FA Cup.

Simon Cox has been a man in form for the Shrimpers over the festive period, with the former Reading striker getting himself back amongst the goals. The 29-year-old hasn’t been too prolific this season but he managed to net three in his last three appearances and they will hope that he can keep his form up. If they can get him on the scoresheet on a regular basis it could well be the difference between reaching the play-offs and missing out. He now has seven strikes to his name this term, with Stephen McLaughlin and Anthony Wordsworth also chipping in regularly with six apiece.

Sheffield United look unstoppable at the moment and come into this game on fire. They have won each of their last five League One matches on the bounce and have now lost just one of their last 21. That has seen them climb from bottom of the table after four matches to top after 25 and they will be looking to stay their and finally end their six year exodus from the Championship. They have also further bolstered their options this week with the signing of Samir Carruthers from MK Dons. The 23-year-old is one of the best midfielders at League One level and will add competition for places in what is already a talented engine room with John Fleck, Paul Coutts and Mark Duffy. Carruthers is likely to start this one from the bench given the form of the other three, but is more than capable of coming on and making an impact.

The festive period couldn’t have gone much better for the Blades. They took maximum points from their matches against Oldham, Northampton and Bury as well as coming through relatively unscathed injury wise with only Leon Clarke having suffered any sort of injury and even that is only minor. Teams have tried to frustrate them in recent weeks, sitting back and almost playing for a draw but the Blades keep on finding a way to win. Billy Sharp has been scoring plenty of goals with five in his last four appearances, whilst Kieron Freeman has also been an unlikely hero with two goals in his last two matches. They are now the second highest scoring team in the league with 46 strikes to their name which shows just how dangerous they are going forward.

This is a tough match to call with both sides being in such good form at the moment. For that reason we would avoid picking a winner and instead back goals. The Blades have been on an exceptional run on the road but have conceded in all bar one of their matches away from home so backing both teams to score looks a great price at 10/11. You also can’t look beyond backing Sharp to find the net, he is enjoying his best season in years in front of goal and at 11/10 he has to be back to score anytime. Five of Sheffield United’s last six matches have been level at half-time, so we would also recommend having a look at backing the half time draw which is priced at 5/4.
