Swansea City v Arsenal Betting Preview – 14/01/17

In our Swansea City v Arsenal betting preview we look at the best possible betting tips between the two sides.

Arsenal will look to close the gap between themselves and the top four by beating struggling Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday. The Gunners haven’t been in the best form on the road in the league, but did manage to claim a 2-1 comeback victory against Preston North End in the FA Cup last time out. Swansea meanwhile crashed out of the FA Cup in the third round, losing to Hull City at the KCOM Stadium, but they did manage to win in their last league outing. They beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park.

It has been an extremely tricky season for Swansea City. The Welsh side have struggled for form since the outset, winning just four of their 20 matches in the league to date. They have already seen off two managers with Francesco Guidolin and Bob Bradley both having been sacked and it is now on the shoulders of Paul Clement to get them out of danger. This will be the former Derby managers first official league match in charge, but he did seem to have an impact at Crystal Palace in their last league match where they picked up a first victory in five.

Their victory at Palace was hard earned and crucial, the Eagles were four points ahead of them prior to the match and so defeat would have left them with a huge gap to overturn. However the win saw them close the gap to just one point and a victory in this one could see them leap out of the bottom three, should other results go their way. They have often relied on Gylfi Sigurdsson heavily and he has this week been linked with a move to Everton which would significantly weaken their chances of survival so it is imperative that they keep the Icelandic star. He has contributed five goals and six assists this season, meaning he has hand in almost half of the Swans goals in the Premier League. Take him away and it is hard to see any creativity in the side and they could struggle for goals, which at the moment is the only thing keeping them alive as they are defensively all over the place having shipped 45 in 20.

Arsenal have had an up and down last month or so which has left more questions than answers. At home the Gunners have been fine, comfortably beating Crystal Palace and edging out West Brom over Christmas. However on the road their form has dipped and they come into this one winless in their last three matches away from home. They suffered defeats at the hands of Everton and Manchester City and whilst they did come from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 at Bournemouth, it was still a result deemed not good enough for Arsene Wenger’s men. They are now eight points adrift of Chelsea at the top of the table and they will know that matches like this are must win if they are to have any chance of lifting the trophy.

One man who has been enjoying his football recently is Olivier Giroud. The French striker has spent most of the season sat on the bench with Alexis Sanchez leading the line as a lone striker, but with injuries mounting he has been given a chance in the last few weeks. He has now scored in each of his last four matches including winning goals against Preston and West Brom and the leveller against AFC Bournemouth. If the team plays to his strengths the former Montpellier man can be a real handful for defenders with his aerial ability up there with the best in the Premier League. Based on current form you have to look at backing him anytime in this one.

We can’t look beyond an away win in this one. Despite Swansea picking up a result at Palace it will take a lot longer for the deep lying problems to be resolved at the club. Arsenal have much better players than their opponents and having had chance to allow Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez to recharge their batteries last weekend they will be fresh for this one. We do fancy the Swans to score however as they have been decent going forward and Arsenal have conceded in their last nine matches away from home, so Arsenal and BTTS looks the best bet at 19/10, whilst we also like the look of a 3-1 Arsenal win at 11/1.
