AC Milan v Inter Milan Betting Tips & Odds

In our AC Milan v Inter Milan betting preview we look at the best possible betting tips between the two sides.

The Coppa Italia Quarter Finals match up two of world football’s fiercest rivals, as Luciano Spalletti’s Inter Milan take on Gennaro Gattuso’s AC Milan at the San Siro in the second Derby della Madonnina of the season. AC Milan are in dreadful form, with the club’s decision to terminate the contract of Vincenzo Montella in hopes of a transformation under former player Gennaro Gattuso doing nothing to inspire the massively talented squad. They’re struggling with taking three points even against the easier sides they’re facing, making a high finish look hard to believe. Inter Milan remain in the top three but have seen their weakest form in past weeks, where a lengthly unbeaten record was tarnished in two shockingly poor performances. The first Milan derby meeting of the campaign was a league encounter back in October, where a hattrick from Inter striker Mauro Icardi had his side in full flow from start to finish, defeating their local rivals 3-2.

Milan’s return to the big time is all but dead and buried this season

When Milan’s rich owners spent heavily in the summer, they clearly had aspirations of returning to their mantle as one of Italy’s most celebrated sides, and we admittedly believed that they’d be a much improved outfit with bringing in so many top rate players, but that’s been a far cry from the truth. Promising manager Vincenzo Montella was relieved of his duties at the end of November, with fans made even more unnerved by his replacement, as heavy-handed former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso came in to take his place, presenting the players with a man who’s met with similar respect as Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid for his impressive playing days at the San Siro but is already proven to be an incapable football manager from previous stints at Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa, where he sits with an overall record of forty wins from 127 games as a head coach.

It’s been no surprise to see him falling short of expectations from day one, being held to a draw in the dying minutes against recently promoted Benevento, who were yet to take a single point beforehand and losing to lowly Rijeka in the Europa League. They then showed some better form on home soil, defeating Bologna and Hellas Verona, before losing in a far more important league meeting again with Hellas Verona, as well as finding defeat at home to Atalanta. Leonardo Bonucci came in from Juventus over the summer, and it was an exciting acquisition as it could finally see a more solid defensive with help from the world class Italy centre-back, but he’s been a changed man since arriving, even receiving criticism from Fabio Capello in days gone by, who said he couldn’t defend. Milan currently sit stuck at ninth, twenty-one points from the top spot.

Gennaro Gattuso AC Milan

Gennaro Gattuso has unsurprisingly been incapable of improving AC Milan’s poor form

Spalletti’s men were unbeaten in twenty-three before losing their last two

Similarly to AC Milan last summer, their local derby rivals Inter Milan spent heavily in the previous summer, giving out an estimated £140m with hopes of significantly improving their squad to challenge with all other sides in the Serie A, but saw their dreams shattered when manager Frank de Boer was sacked by the time they reached November. Stefano Pioli took his place, showing signs of consistency for a lot of his tenure, but tailing off towards the end of the term, where castaway Roma manager Luciano Spalletti came in to take on the job over the summer. A lot of the focus was on Napoli, who were battling to surpass Juventus in the top spot, but it was Inter who’d had the strongest start, going unbeaten in their first seventeen games over all competitions including in draws with Juventus and Napoli.

Despite looking capable of continuing in a similar vein, Inter faced a shock in December when hosting Udinese at the San Siro, as the solidly midtable side won by three goals to one, ruining what was a truly exceptional run of form. Their last game had them taking on Sassuolo on Saturday, who were unpredictable since bringing in a new manager, but showed regimentation and organisation, winning by a goal to nil over Spalletti’s far more talented outfit. That now sees Inter with two defeats in their last two games played, and doesn’t leave much hope for a game as highly anticipated as this one. Stuck at third in the Serie A has them four points off usual league winners Juventus in second, and a lot of their hopes here will be lying on the shoulders of star striker Mauro Icardi, who is prolific in scoring seventeen league goals this season.
