Atalanta v Lyon Betting Preview

In our Atalanta v Lyon betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta welcome Lyon to the Mapei Stadium looking to secure top spot in Group E of the Europa League. The hosts come into this clash at the summit courtesy of goal difference which currently stands just one higher than the visitors. It’s Atalanta’s first ever year in the Europa League and they’ve made a seamless transition into it, they secured qualification a while ago but they’d love to go through as group winners. The visitors come in the form of Ligue 1 outfit Lyon who’re no strangers to European competition and they’ll also be desperate to finish top of the group in order to secure a potentially favourable draw in the next round. They’re enjoying a magnificent season under boss Bruno Genesio and they’re currently in fine form, losing just one of their previous fourteen games in all competitions.

Atalanta loving life in Europe

It’s been a remarkable twelve months or so for everyone involved with Atalanta. Last season they took their game to the next level by stunning Serie A to finish in fourth position ahead of the likes of AC Milan, Inter Milan and Fiorentina to secure automatic qualification through into the Europa League after accumulating a colossal 72 points from their 38 league games. Domestically things haven’t progressed as smoothly as they would’ve liked as they bid to follow up one of their best ever league seasons, with the departure of several key players not helping. But that hasn’t been evident in the Europa League, where they’ve made huge strides this season on their debut. They’ve already secured qualification for the knockout round with a game to go and they’re relishing the challenge of facing sides from around the continent.

They come into this one knowing that if they avoid defeat they will top the group and potentially set up a favourable draw in the round of 32, so there’s an awful lot to play for desperate sealing their passage through. They come into match day six fresh from thrashing Premier League strugglers Everton 5-1 at Goodison Park in their previous European outing. Gasperini’s men produced a fantastic display to rout the Toffees and if they can deliver another performance of that calibre here they stand a great chance of claiming another positive result. Since picking up that win over the Merseysiders they’ve beaten Serie A strugglers Benevento (1-0) before holding Torino to a draw on Saturday. A big improvement is needed from the weekend but with a large home crowd behind them they’re more than capable of grinding out a result.

One defeat in fourteen for in-form Lyon

Making the trip to northern Italy are Bruno Genesio’s Lyon who’re enjoying a magnificent season both domestically and in Europe. They’re currently second in Ligue 1 behind world footballs biggest spenders PSG and behind their opponents here on just goal difference, so there’s plenty to shout about at the moment for their fans. They’ve moved on very well from the departure of key man Alexandre Lacazette who finally departed the club for Arsenal in the summer, with a number of new stars grabbing the headlines. The likes of Nabil Fekir, Mariano and Memphis Depay have all stood up and been counted for over the course of the campaign, scoring a huge 31 league goals between them which is very impressive. And what makes it even more impressive is that those three have hit ten more than their opponents have managed in Serie A.

Lyon come into this clash fresh from securing an important 2-1 win over Caen in Ligue 1 on the weekend courtesy of Maxwel Cornet and the prolific Mariano. It wasn’t the prettiest of performances but Genesio would’ve been delighted with how his side battled through the ninety minutes to claim what was a huge three points. That ensured they picked up their fifth successive away victory, it’s an area of their game they’ve improved significantly. Before that win they’d won their previous three games on the road 5-0 against the likes of Saint-Etienne & Nice – who’re both very decent sides. The pressure coming into this one is all on the hosts so we can really see Lyon coming here and playing their swashbuckling brand of attacking football which could result in another big victory for them.

Lyon have really come of age this season
