Basel v Manchester City Betting Tips & Odds

In our Basel v Manchester City betting preview we look at what could possibly be the best bets between the two sides.

Overview

Pep Guardiola’s high flying Manchester City travel to Switzerland this week to take on Basel in the first leg of their knockout tie. The visitors go into this game as favourites thanks to a terrific season where they’ve lost just two games in all competitions. The hosts aren’t to be taken lightly though, they had a strong qualifying campaign in Group A, finishing eventual runners-up to winners Manchester United by just three points. City aced their group however, finishing top ahead of Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli and Feyenoord so will confident on their chances in this fixture.

Basel FC

Basel welcome Manchester City in the first leg of their all important knockout tie.

Pep’s men formidable this term

Manchester City are without doubt the standout team in world football right now. With top class quality all over the pitch, the Citizen’s have taken the Premier League by storm this season and now find themselves 16 points clear at the top of the summit with 11 games still left to play. They put in yet another stellar performance this weekend when they thrashed Claude Puel’s Leicester City 5-1 at the Etihad thanks to a superb team performance. Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for the Sky Blues inside the first three minutes, before Sergio Aguero made the night his own by tucking away four goals in an all round stunning individual performance. Kevin de Bruyne assisted three of those five goals and showed everyone exactly why he is one of the hottest prospects on the planet right now, so City head into this clash a force to be reckoned with here.

It’s not just the Premier League Manchester City have been dominating in this term however, they’ve also taken the Champions League by storm this time out. Topping Group F with complete ease, Pep Guardiola’s army saw off the likes of Napoli and Shakhtar Donetsk to cement their place in the knockout stages. With 14 goals scored and only 5 conceded in just six matches, it’s clear to see why City are currently the favourites to win the whole competition at 7/2 this season. The visitors have scored an astonishing 29 goals in their previous 9 games in all competitions so will prove to be an extremely difficult side for Basel to keep out in this tie. Sergio Aguero will be brimming with confidence following his recent performance over Leicester on Saturday so backing him to score a brace could be a shout in this game; that’s priced at 9/2 with Betfair. If you fancy a first goalscorer bet on this match though, Raheem Sterling is always a good option. He’s always in the right place at the right time and with the likes of de Bruyne creating chances from deep he could really damage Basel here. Sterling to bag FIRST in this clash is priced at 7/2 with Coral.

Kevin de Bruyne

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne is arguably the best playmaker in the world at the minute.

Basel the underdogs

The hosts head into this game knowing they’re going to have their work cut out to get anything from this encounter. Basel finished second in Group A, behind Manchester United and sealed their place in the knockout stages after beating United, CSKA Moscow and Benfica throughout their challenging six game schedule. Raphaël Wicky’s men conceded just 5 goals throughout qualifying so won’t be an easy side to break down here. Basel managed to keep 4 clean sheets in their 6 group games, and this season have the best defensive record in the Swiss Super League, conceding just 17 goals in 21 matches. That’s all well and good, but they are yet to face a side as dominant as City this term.

Going forward, Basel have been equally impressive this time out. They thrashed Benfica 5-0 back in September and have averaged two goals a game in their domestic league since the campaign kicked off back in the summer. 20-year-old striker Albian Ajeti has been the stand out man for the Swiss outfit this season, he’s got 8 goals to his name so far and always looks sharp in the final third. Ajeti is 7/2 to score ANYTIME with PaddyPower, so that could be a decent selection if you fancy a bet on the home side in this one. The main priority for Basel here will be for them to keep a clean sheet. An away goal for City will all but kill off their chances of progression in this years competition, but that’s going to be an extremely tough challenge considering how well the Sky Blues are playing at the moment. Can they cause an upset here?

Raphael Wicky Basel

Raphael Wicky’s men have a great defensive record this term.
