Cheltenham Festival Horse Race

Unconfident on your racing knowledge but want to get involved in the fun fest that is the Cheltenham Festival? Then don’t worry we have you covered!

The Cheltenham Festival is the pinnacle of the jumps racing season in the UK. Jumps racing is a slightly more complicated form of racing, as there are obstacles to be negotiated. Also know as “National hunt racing”, it is split into two main categories – steeplechases and hurdles. There is also sometimes “bumper” races. These are the type of races that will be run at the Cheltenham Festival. The races are then divided into classes, with Grade 1 being the best class.

For many people, betting is a huge part of horse racing, and many see it as a fun way to get involved in the sport. A lot of people tend to back horses in singles. This is just backing one horse. When you back a horse in a single say at odds of 6/1- that would mean that for every £1 you bet, you would receive £6 back (plus your original stake) should your horse win.

You can also back a horse each way. This is what people tend to do with horses that are less fancied or outsiders. When you put a bet on a horse each way, in reality you are placing two bets: one for the horse to win the race, and another for it to “place”. Depending on the size of the field, the horse can place in second, third, fourth and sometimes fifth. The place part of the bet is paid at a proportion of the main odds, often ¼.

An each way bet will cost you twice the stake of a win single, but you have two chances to win. And if your horse wins the race you are paid out for both the win and the place bets.

Bets Explained

During the Cheltenham Festival we will be getting the festival fever and will try our hand at a few bets! For those new to horse racing, the bets are all explained below – any questions feel free to message us and ask or you may be better trying out the boys in the know over at the TheWinnersEnclosure! They will have a dedicated page to this years Cheltenham festival, detailing each day, potential winners and course insight for everything you’ll need on the day. Just follow the link.

Place Acca – Place Accas normally consist of at least four horses all to place in separate races. TWE have had some huge success with these over the past year. They study the form to pick what they believe are the best value horses to place. Often Skybet are the choice for these bets as they offer extra place races in which we are given an additional place as safety. For example, they will offer 4 places rather than the 3 offered elsewhere. These are a good bet for a bit of fun as it is spread across the day and obviously the horses don’t have to win, they just have to come in the top 2, 3 or 4 – even sometimes 5 or 6 places! Over the past 6 months TWE have landed 50/1, 180/1, 16/1, 16/1,14/1 and 7/1 accas!

Request-a-bet – Long gone are the days where your horse racing bet can only consist of win or each way selections. Times have changed and you are now able to bet on anything whether its place markets, how many winners a jockey will ride in one day, straight or reverse forecasts, winning distances.

One of the most innovative betting markets around at the moment comes from Sky Bet and it is their ‘Request-A-Bet’ market. We also like to sometimes mix sports in our Request-a-bet’s and tailor them to suit everyone. The Request-a-bet allows you to literally request anything you want! These are incredibly popular and are seen as novelty bets, but with novelty lies value and TWE managed to land huge 66/1, 22/1, 35/1, 110/1, 28/1, 150/1 and 125/1 winners leaving followers very happy!

Lucky 15– The lucky 15 is a 4 selection wager consisting of 15 bets: 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and a four-fold accumulator. To back a lucky 15 online you simply choose 4 selections and then select the Lucky 15 option under multiples on your bet slip. Be careful as the cost of a lucky 15 is your stake multiplied by 15 – so a £1 lucky 15 has a total stake of £15. One of the main benefits of a Lucky15 is that not all of your selections need to win for you to make profit. Also, most bookies offer double or triple the odds on one winning selection in a Lucky 15. The Lucky 15 is one of the peoples favourite bets going and we have seen some big winners over the years.

Win Treble – A treble is a multiple bet which consists of three selections, both of which must be successful to gain a return. The treble is a combination of three selections. If it is a win treble then all three must win, if it is an each way treble then all three must at least place to win.

NAP– A NAP of the Day in Horse Racing is a Tipsters best bet for that days racing. This involves them studying the form across all the cards, taking up to 40 races in to consideration and choosing their strongest selection. If you were going to follow only ONE of a Tipsters tips it would be their NAP of the Day. Nap (derived from the card game Napoleon) is our most confident selection of the day.
