Birmingham City v Nottingham Forest Betting Preview – 14/01/17

In our Birmingham City v Nottingham Forest betting preview we look at the best possible betting tips between the two sides.

Gianfranco Zola will once again hope to get his first win as manager of Birmingham City on Saturday, as they host Philippe Montanier’s Nottingham Forest at St Andrew’s. Birmingham City are thirteenth and have looking distinctly uninspired since the appointment of Gianfranco Zola back in mid-December. Nottingham Forest are twentieth with their situation becoming increasingly more frightening as time goes on, with only two points keeping Philippe Montanier’s side safe from a slip into the relegation zone.

The future was looking bright for Birmingham City at the start of December, as former player Gary Rowett had led the side to an impressive run of games, pushing them up to seventh in the Championship. Everything went on its head soon after though, when Gary Rowett was shockingly sacked by the new owners of the club, former Watford manager Gianfranco Zola taking his place a few short hours later. It seems as if karma has fought back against the harsh decision too, as Zola has made the side far less enticing to watch, losing three and drawing one of four league games in charge. Their only saving grace has been Lukas Jutkiewicz who came in on loan over the summer from recently promoted Burnley, scoring a big nine goals over all competitions, and forcing the hand of Birmingham to make his move to St Andrew’s permanent.

It was yet another big test in their last game, as they took on Rafa Benitez’s second place Newcastle United in the third round of the FA Cup. They didn’t get off to the best start either, The Magpies taking a corner which Birmingham panicked in dealing with, leaving an easy finish for Daryl Murphy to put his side ahead after just six minutes. Gianfranco’s Zola managed to get his side back in the game before the end of the first half, with Jonathan Grounds making a swift across the opposition penalty area, leaving a speedy tap in for Lukas Jutkiewicz. The second half saw Birmingham displaying some exciting attacking opportunities, but it amounted to nothing and the game ended as an ineffective but useful 1-1 draw, which now means they will play the tie again at St James’ Park.

When former Rennes manager Philippe Montanier was appointed Nottingham Forest manager in the summer, it came out of the blue as he had the positive of spending last season pushing his French side up to ninth in Ligue 1, but the negative of having no experience in any of the four English divisions. Sadly, it has been the second fact about the French manager that has stood out most throughout his opening six months, as he’s won seven and drawn five of twenty-five league games. The Tricky Trees are twentieth in the Championship, only safe from a damning fall into the relegation zone by two points. As time’s gone on, matters have worsened and though Montanier remains safe from being relieved of his duties as manager at this current moment in time, there’s nothing saying his situation will remain the same if they continue in the direction they’ve been going.

Oddly enough, former Birmingham City manager Gary Rowett has been the man tipped to replace Philippe Montanier if he was sacked by the club, and that will become a reality if he doesn’t find a way to revitalise his floundering team. They’ve started the new year in a similar vein, narrowly losing to Barnsley before taking on Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup. Forest held their own for most of the first half, only conceding in the dying minutes when Will Grigg swooped in to knock the ball past Stephen Henderson. The Latics were then able to assure the win in the second half, Yanic Wildschut finishing cleanly into The Tricky Trees’ goal after some interesting interplay, defeating them by two goals to nil.
