Brighton v Manchester City Betting Tips and Odds

In our Brighton v Manchester City betting preview we look at the best possible betting tips between the two sides.

Overview

The evening kick-off this Saturday in the opening weekend of the Premier League seasons sees Pep Guardiola take his Manchester City side on the long trip down to the AMEX Stadium to face Chris Hughton’s Brighton. Obviously City will be clear favourites here but anything can happen on the opening day of the season. Morale will be high at Brighton who will feature in the Premier League for the first time in their history. They’ve seriously been thrown in at the deep end with this fixture though, coming up against the big spenders City.

This is the first meeting between these two clubs for nine years, the last time they came up against each other was in the League Cup in 2008. The score was 2-2 after normal time and the Seagulls went on to win on penalties to knock the Premier League outfit out of the cup in the second round.

Murray was on the scoresheet back in 2008 and will be looking to do the same here

Not the easiest start to life in the Premier League for Brighton

The home side Brighton head into the visit of Manchester City hoping that they can kick start life in the top flight with what would be a seriously impressive three points against the favourites for the title. The Seagulls really should’ve been promoted as the Champions of the Championship but they failed to win in their last three matches when all they needed was one victory to be crowned winners. They won’t be dwelling on it though as they still won promotion and will be battling it out with the best. Looking at their transfer business over the summer shows them to have made a major statement in bringing in PSV central midfielder Davy Propper, as well as Valencia back-up ‘keeper Mathew Ryan.

Chris Hughton has spent some time in the league before, managing Newcastle United and Norwich City in past years, which only gears him up for a stronger chance of remaining there for longer than just the one year, especially ahead of other recently promoted manager David Wagner, who has no previous experience in the top tier. Brighton will be hopeful of their chances with the squad they’ve got, as players like Lewis Dunk, Glenn Murray, Anthony Knockaert and on-loan Izzy Brown to name but a few have enough proven quality to put up a claim for remaining in the league for the years to come. It’s not the ideal start as they face clear title favourites but it puts the pressure on their opposition.

Hard to imagine Simeone and Hughton together but Brighton’s last friendly had them narrowly losing to Atletico

Spending over £200m puts Manchester City as title favourites

The away side Manchester City have no time to lose in picking up points, as Pep Guardiola’s first season in charge of club fell well short of their high expectations. Battling to third place through some impressively high-scoring performances would suit a lot of teams nicely, but after spending over £190m in the previous summer, it didn’t match the club’s ambitions. That being said, Pep Guardiola isn’t a miracle worker and would need some time to set his stamp on the team. If things play out in similar style in the coming season then the pricy acquisition of Pep Guardiola could very easily come into question, not helped by him spending a further £200m+ in this summer’s window.

Racking up a mind-blowing £127m on full-backs alone is enough to point out City’s intentions to solve a damaging issue they’ve had with keeping clean sheets. The fact that £77m of that amount was spent on two players in the same position is telling of what state the current transfer market is in. Monaco attacker Bernardo Silva is one of their signings that has fallen to the background, but he could prove to be one of the most important of the summer, especially based on his forward-thinking efforts which helped Monaco to a shock Ligue 1 title victory in the last campaign. He cost £45m too, so even without many being all too familiar with his name, a strong start would be important for his chances of success.

Benjamin Mendy is City’s most expensive signing, costing a whopping £51m
