Bristol City v Cardiff City Betting Preview – 14/01/17

In our Bristol City v Cardiff City betting preview we look at the best possible betting tips between the two sides.

Bristol City welcome Cardiff City to Ashton Gate for the second Severnside derby of the season on Saturday lunchtime. These two clubs are bitter rivals and the Robins will be keen to exact some revenge on their Welsh opponents having lost the reverse fixture 2-1 a few months ago. Both sides come into this fixture having played in the FA Cup last weekend, Bristol City were held to a 0-0 draw by League One’s Fleetwood Town whilst Cardiff crashed out to Fulham.

It has been a shocking couple of months for Lee Johnson’s Bristol City who find themselves on a dreadful run of form. The Robins have lost their last six matches in a row in the Championship and are starting to plummet down the table. When they faced Cardiff back in October they were 12 points ahead of their rivals and sitting in the play-off places, however they are now laying in 18th place and level on points with the Bluebirds after picking up just seven points in that time which shows how their form has dipped. There is now just three points separating themselves and the relegation zone so they really need to get their act together soon to avoid being sucked into a dog fight at the bottom.

In five of their last six defeats the Robins have managed to score which suggests that it is not going forward where the problem lays. Their goals conceded tally will be Johnson’s main cause for concern with his men having shipped 13 in those six outings including three against Reading last time out. They completely collapsed against the Royals, holding a 2-0 lead with just 18 minutes left to play before conceding three times to lose. The only positive from that match in the end was Tammy Abraham bagging a brace, he has struggled a little for form since the early parts of the season but having him back in and amongst the goals certainly boosts their chances of survival.

Cardiff City have been going in the opposite direction to Bristol City and appear to be digging themselves out of trouble. The Bluebirds started the season in terrible form, winning just twice in 11 matches under Paul Trollope which ultimately led to his dismissal. They turned to Neil Warnock to get them out of danger and having worked miracles to keep Rotherham United in the Championship last term, he appears to have had the magic touch again. Since his arrival they have moved from second bottom to 19th place and have lost just one of their last six in the Championship. Warnock is a proven manager at Championship level who usually gets results and having him at the helm looks more than likely to be enough to keep them up.

They have found their goalscoring touch recently, bagging nine in their last five matches with a whole bunch of their players chipping in with goals. Peter Whittingham and Anthony Pilkington have been their main threats, but they still look to lack a focal point up front with Rickie Lambert not having had the desired impact. However, it is defensively where Warnock will look to improve his side in the January transfer window as they look to ensure Championship survival. Having shipped a total of 38 goals so far this term they have the fourth worst goals against tally in the division, with only Rotherham (55), Nottingham Forest (45) and Blackburn Rovers (40) having conceded more times.

We envisage an entertaining match at Ashton Gate, neither side is good at the back so we can see a few goals. Backing both teams to score looks a great bet at 10/11 given four of both teams last five matches have seen both teams on the scoresheet. It’s a tough match to call, but we are just edging towards a Cardiff City win. Bristol City are in shocking form at the moment and can’t buy a win and Cardiff showed what they could do when beating Aston Villa last time out. The Bluebirds are 23/10 to win the match, whilst a 2-1 away win looks appealing at 12/1.
