So what exactly is the EFL Cup?

The newly rebranded EFL Cup (League Cup) gets underway in August, with Manchester United the defending champions. United, who won three trophies under Jose Mourinho in his first season at Old Trafford will be looking to retain their title this time out. Southampton were the unsuccessful finalists after being beaten 3-2 in fairly unfortunate fashion, they were arguably the stronger of the two sides and had a perfectly legal goal disallowed for offside which ultimately went on to cost them. The first round in August will only feature teams in the Championship and below however and may see some early surprises as clubs try to find their best starting lineups.

The EFL Cup final is played at the end of February, so presents an opportunity for clubs to get some silverware under their belts early on. With several new faces in the Premier League this season, it could make this tournament more attractive as they look for a positive start at their new clubs, whilst the likes of Everton, Southampton and West Ham will all surely be keen to challenge for a rare piece of silverware with some of the so-called bigger clubs often favouring other more prestigious tournaments.

Any team is capable of upsetting their opposition in this competition and this has shown with some huge underdog prices on our accumulators in seasons gone by. In recent years Sheffield United have upset the odds by reaching the semi-finals despite only being in League One, whilst Bradford City reached the final back in 2013 whilst still in League Two, so it is always an intriguing competition to watch for the neutral.
