Carlisle United v Morecambe Betting Preview – 14/01/17

In our Carlisle United v Morecambe betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Keith Curle’s Carlisle United welcome Morecambe to Brunton Park looking to end a run of back-to-back defeats. It’s been a torrid couple of weeks for The Cumbrians which has seen them beaten twice, after initially losing just one of their opening 23 games. But now back on home so they’ll be confident they can get back to winning ways and they have a decent record there, winning seven of their last eight there. Morecambe make the trip to Cumbria down in 17th and it’s been a tough season for Jim Bentley’s men. The Shrimps have lost six of their last ten league fixtures but they did manage to pick up a morale boosting victory over Notts County on Saturday.

It’s been a fantastic 16/17 to date for Carlisle United and Keith Curle. The Cumbrians are looking like a completely different side to the one that finished up in tenth position last term and they have a great chance of winning automatic promotion. They’re an opponent no one in League Two enjoys facing as they’re very difficult to beat. But there’s been a few chinks in the armour in recent weeks, going down to back-to-back defeats for the first time since February 2015. Losses against Grimsby (3-1) & Colchester (4-1) have brought them back down to earth slightly and they’re in need of a big result here.

The big defeat at Colchester came in their last outing on Saturday, on what was an afternoon to forget for the travelling Carlisle fans. They were battered at the Colchester Community Stadium, with U’s striker Kurtis Guthrie grabbing the headlines with a hat-trick. It was a damaging defeat for everyone involved with the club and it’s seen the gap between themselves and the play-offs cut to just four points, so it’s vital they bounce back with a victory here. And they’ll be fancying their chances of doing just that, only leaders Doncaster have picked up more points than them on home soil and they’ve won seven of their eight there.

The Shrimps make the long trip to Cumbria way down in 17th and it’s been a hard season for Jim Bentley’s men. Morecambe have been in and around the relegation zone for the majority of the campaign and it’s put the 40 year-old under some pressure. They’ve been beaten in six of their last ten league games but due to the poor form of those around them, there’s still a healthy gap between themselves and the relegation zone. They’re currently nine points away from danger but they have some tough fixtures on the horizon against the likes of Doncaster, Cambridge & Barnet so it’s important they pick up something here.

Morecambe were last in league action on Saturday when they produced a great performance at the Globe Arena to roll out 4-1 winners against Notts County. The Shrimps won the game after just 31 minute, going 3-0 up through Lee Molyneux, Paul Mullin & Michael Rose. Kevin Ellison added a fourth in the closing stages but the victory came at a cost, with Andrew Fleming receiving a red card and he’ll be unavailable for this encounter. Surprisingly, Morecambe’s performances on the road have been where they’ve picked up the majority of their points. 17 of their 30 points have come away from the Globe Arena and three more here would be a big upset.

This a huge game at both ends of the table with plenty on the line. It’s going to be a big test of character for the hosts who’re currently on their worst losing run in almost two years and their supporters will be eager for them to get back to winning ways. The visitors have surprised a few people on their travels this season so it’s certainly not outside their capabilities to get a result here. However, we’re expecting the hosts to have too much for The Shrimps and we can see plenty of goals – a home win with over 2.5 is priced at 23/20 which looks like a solid bet.
