The UEFA Champions League returns in September, with expectations built up high after a worthwhile tournament in the last season. Real Madrid were victors in the last final, overcoming Massimiliano Allegri’s Juventus by a whopping four goals to two, winning for the twelfth time in their history and being named the first team to win the competition twice in succession outside of the European Cup era.

English sides in the tournament included Leicester City, Manchester City and Arsenal, who all made it past the group stages, as well as Tottenham Hotspur, who showed their shortcomings, finishing third in their group. Leicester City heroically played out of their skin to defeat Sevilla over two legs before finding a narrow defeat against Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals. Arsenal were unluckily drawn against Bayern Munich, whereby the German giants thrashed The Gunners by ten goals to two over two legs, throwing Arsene Wenger’s side out of the competition.

Manchester City had convincingly beaten Monaco 5-3 in their round of 16 first leg, with it looking pretty much set for them to make it into the later stages of the competition as the hype surrounding a stunning eight-goal encounter. It was a massive turn of events when City faced the French Ligue 1 team away from home, as Monaco defeated Pep Guardiola’s side by three goals to one to push them out of the tournament.

Champions League Odds & Favourites

The 2017/18 season sees Chelsea return to the competition after previously falling by the wayside from their appalling tenth place finish back in the previous campaign. Winning the league under Antonio Conte sees a deserved return to Europe, with hopes of emulating their one and only victory in the tournament in 2012. Liverpool are also back after their late fourth place finish in the Premier League, providing they can win a crucial qualifying fixture in the run-up.

Working as a giant of the tournament, Real Madrid must be considered the out-and-out favourite yet again after winning it twice in a row and always causing damage to every side they face. Cristiano Ronaldo had his thirty-second birthday in the last season, prompting some journalists to question his chances of playing to the same levels as in recent years, but he’s proved his immense talent, contributing fifty-six goals and thirteen assists for club and country.

European Competitors

Another frontrunner for success in the competition are La Liga rivals Barcelona, who have shown dominance in lifting the coveted trophy nine times. They have a team as perfectly put together as Real Madrid but instead of being led out by the world-beating Cristiano Ronaldo, Barcelona have superstar Lionel Messi, who is constant competition with the Real number seven, scoring fifty-six goals and eleven assists for club and country in his own respective efforts.

Other major outfits that see themselves as being worthy of lifting the trophy are Bayern Munich, Juventus and Real Madrid’s local derby rivals Atletico Madrid. There’s hopes that the likes of AC Milan and Inter Milan will eventually bounce back to the sort of form they’re remembered for, as they used to be a major contender in the competition before suffering some poor seasons in recent years.

Whether it’s the group stage, round of sixteen or quarter-finals, we’ll be putting together the best tips for each stage of the Champions League, with the sole intention of getting you reliably researched bets.
