Chelsea v Peterborough United Betting Preview – 08/01/17

In our Chelsea v Peterborough United betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Premier League leaders Chelsea will look to get their FA Cup campaign off to a winning start when they welcome Peterborough United to Stamford Bridge. The League One side will be looking to pull off a major cup upset on Sunday afternoon, but it will be a huge task for them. The Posh come into this fixture having picked up a more than respectable point away at promotion chasing Scunthorpe United on Monday. Chelsea meanwhile will hope to bounce back from a defeat against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in midweek, their first defeat in 14 matches.

Chelsea are expected to make several changes to their starting line-up for this game, giving some of their players a rest. Two players who have been confirmed for a start in this one however are defender Kurt Zouma and striker Michy Batshuayi. Zouma has been out injured for over a year so it will be a big game for him as he looks to build his fitness, whilst Batshuayi has an opportunity to impress having being limited to substitute appearances this season. The former Marseille man has struggled for game time due to the form of Diego Costa, but he has proven that he can score goals having netted 23 times in 50 appearances for the French club last season.

The Blues were quarter-finalists in this competition last season and having lifted the trophy seven times in their history including four titles between 2007 and 2012. They have not been to the final since they won it in the 2011/12 season and whilst the Premier League is their number one priority Antonio Conte would surely like a good run in this competition too. With them not playing in Europe this season it gives them a good opportunity to go for the double as their players should be fresher than some of their rivals.

Peterborough are having a solid season in League One and currently sit just outside the play-off places. The Posh are in eighth place as it stands, one point behind sixth placed Fleetwood Town but thoughts of the league will be far from their minds when they step onto the pitch at Stamford Bridge. They will hope that they can replicate one of their most famous moments and knock Chelsea out as they did against Arsenal back in 1965.

Grant McCann’s side are all about attacking play, they score plenty of goals and are amongst League One’s top scorers this term with 38 in 25 matches. However they are sometimes a little suspect at the back which will be a worry coming into this one. When playing against such a high calibre of opposition you can afford no mistakes at the back, so this is a huge game for the likes of Michael Bostwick and Ryan Tafazoli who will be charged with keeping the Blues attack quiet. McCann has said however that he doesn’t intend to change his style of play against the Blues, insisting that they have nothing to lose and will go all out for an upset. We feel this will prove costly though and Chelsea will pick them off and claim a comfortable victory.

Overall we cannot see an upset in this one, the Posh will be too open if McCann’s words are anything to go by and Chelsea will have too much quality for them to handle. For that reason we recommend looking at the Blues to win with a -2 handicap at 13/10, or at a 3-0 correct scoreline which is bigger odds at 6/1. We also think that Batshuayi will take his chance in the team and remind Conte of what he can do, he is 3/4 to net anytime with William Hill.
