Chelsea v Southampton Betting Tips & Odds

In our Chelsea v Southampton betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Chelsea and Southampton meet for the second time in eight days on Sunday with a place in The FA Cup Final up for grabs at Wembley. The Blues came out 3-2 winners in a rollercoaster of a game at St. Mary’s last Saturday which lifted some of the pressure off Antonio Conte and took the hosts one step closer to relegation. Chelsea are again expected to win this weekend and Conte will be desperate to win this competition after losing in the final last season to Arsenal, and he could also need it to save his job. Facing him will Mark Hughes who has a mammoth job on his hands for the remaining weeks of the campaign. The Saints are staring relegation to the Championship in the face so the cup will certainly provide a welcome distraction for everyone involved with the club.

Antonio Conte Chelsea

Defeat here for Antonio Conte is simply not an option, with his future at Stamford Bridge up in the air at the moment

Conte hoping to go one step better

It’s been an incredibly testing season in charge of Chelsea for Antonio Conte but he still has the chance to end it with success. The Blues have really struggled to deliver the level of performance and consistency which saw them dominate English football last term. They won the Premier League title with a record 30 wins along with reaching the final of The FA Cup, but this years efforts have been a far cry from that. An early departure from the Champions League – albeit against Barcelona – and inconsistency in the Premier League has raised the pressure on Conte to huge levels – with many expecting this season to be his last in West London regardless of what happens in the cup. They’re currently a massive 24 points behind Manchester City in top spot and need The FA Cup to salvage their season.

The new year hasn’t been kind to Conte and Chelsea, with their form extremely patchy to say the least. But there has been slight signs of a revival over the last week or so with them recording back-to-back wins in the Premier League. Victories over their opponents here (3-2) and Burnley (2-1) on Thursday night have raised spirits around Stamford Bridge and they’ll be making the trip to the national stadium confident they can make it three from three. Conte rested many of his big hitters for that clash at Turf Moor, where an own goal from Kevin Long and an effort from Victor Moses kept their extremely faint top four hopes alive. The likes of Willian, Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas are all expected to return here for this one and if Chelsea are on song, it will take a monumental effort from the Saints to stop them.

Olivier Giroud Chelsea

Olivier Giroud has had a hand in 21 goals in his 25 FA Cup appearances (14 goals, 7 assists), more than any other player in the competition since his debut in January 2013.

Saints in the cup semis for the first time in 15 years

Facing Chelsea at Wembley are Southampton who’re in the midst of one of their most difficult seasons in their recent history. Since returning to the Premier League five years ago the Saints have finished outside the top half just once (14th, 8th, 7th, 6th, 8th) and despite not having massive hopes for this season after losing several key players over the years, no one quite expected them to struggle how they have done. They’ve spent the majority of the campaign lingering around the wrong end of the table but since the turn of the new year their form has tailed off dramatically, with them winning just once in thirteen PL games. That’s dragged them right into the thick of the relegation battle and with just four games they have a four points deficit to make up – so a shock relegation into the Championship is now the frightening reality for the clubs supporters.

Their league campaign has been a disaster but The FA Cup has been a source of comfort, with them navigating their way through some tricky ties to make it to the semi-finals. They’ve beaten Fulham (1-0), Watford (1-0), West Brom (2-1) and Wigan (2-0) on their way to Wembley but Chelsea is obviously their biggest test yet without a doubt. They proved in their recent Premier League meeting that they can cause them problems after going into a two goal lead through Shane Long and Jan Bednarek, but they also experienced just how ruthless Chelsea are as their fightback proved. It’s vital that Mark Hughes’ men learn from their mistakes at St. Mary’s and play the game, not the occasion. It’s a huge day for the club but unfortunately for the travelling Saints supporters we can only see one winner at Wembley, with Chelsea’s strength in depth and experience just too much.

Charlie Austin

This is a huge test for Southampton but they proved against Chelsea last weekend that they’re capable of causing them problems
