Cheltenham v Luton Betting Tips & Odds

In our Cheltenham v Luton betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Overview

Luton travel west this Saturday to take on Cheltenham in SkyBet League Two. Nathan Jones’ visitors have been superb so far this season; they sit 3rd in the table and could even go top with a win here, providing Accrington Stanley and Notts County slip in their games against Cambridge United and Stevenage respectively. Cheltenham on the other hand have endured a pretty inconsistent first three months of the season, they’re 15th in the table after 15 games, and head into this clash having won just 1 league game in their last 3 outings.

Travellers ruthless in front of goal

Luton have been emphatic in front of goal so far this term, The Hatters have averaged just over 2 goals per game since the campaign kicked off back in August, and look really strong candidates for promotion to League One when the season comes to an end next May. Luton haven’t just been good going forward, they’ve also been defensively sound this season. With just 15 goals shipped in 16 games, the Bedfordshire club statistically have the 3rd strongest defence in the league, behind only Coventry and Lincoln City. They’re an extremely tough side to break down, so Cheltenham are really going to have their work cut out here.

After a hugely impressive run of 9 games unbeaten in the league throughout September and the first half of October, Luton have slightly plateaued in recent weeks, drawing to strugglers Crawley Town and then losing convincingly 3-0 to  Coventry at home in their last two league games. Nathan Jones will be hoping his side can get back to winning ways here, and will feel as though victory is more than achievable considering the form of his leading attacker Danny Hylton. The 28 year old front man has found the net 8 times so far this season, trailing Accrington Stanley’s Billy Kee by just two goals ahead of this tie. He’ll want to close that gap here, and won’t need asking twice if presented with half a chance in front of goal – backing him to score FIRST in this game could be a decent bet, he’s 9/2 with Betfair.

Luton striker Danny Hylton is the danger man for the visitors here, he’s got 8 goals to his name so far this term.

Hosts could move into the top half with a win

Cheltenham could move into the top half of the table with a win here, providing results concerning the teams around them in the table go their way. The Robins are currently 15th but only sit 3 points below 11th place Stevenage with a better goal difference than the Hertfordshire outfit, so could easily close the gap with a victory over Luton tomorrow afternoon. In fact, the league is so tight at the moment, that the hosts could even find themselves in play-off contention if they can go on a bit of a run in the forthcoming weeks. Just 6 points separate Cheltenham from the top 7, so if they can gather some momentum and start picking up some positive results, they could find themselves in a really promising position heading into the festive period.

Cheltenham do carry some good momentum into this tie, they’re unbeaten in their last two league games having registered an impressive 1-0 over Lincoln City and 3-3 draw with play off contenders Wycombe Wanderers in recent weeks. Gary Johnson’s men also beat Newport County 2-1 in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night; goals from Brian Graham and Harry Pell ensuring the Gloucestershire side came away from South Wales with the spoils in a fiercely contested clash at Rodney Parade. Cheltenham did kiss goodbye to their chances of FA Cup glory last Saturday though, a 4-2 loss at home to Maidstone United means the Robins exit the competition at the first hurdle, and highlights their inconsistency and lack of defensive qualities this season.

Cheltenham were undone by non league Maidstone in the FA Cup last weekend.

Odds

Twelve places currently separate these two teams, the hosts have looked far from consistent this season and will be punished heavily if they’re not on at the top of their game here. Luton have been hugely impressive this time out, and head into this encounter as strong favourites despite not being on home soil. If you think the Hatters will clinch the win here, you can get them at 6/5 with Coral. A victory for the hosts is best priced with BetVictor at 9/4, while the match to be drawn is 5/2 with Betway.
