Exeter v Carlisle

Exeter v Carlisle Betting Preview

In our Exeter v Carlisle betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Paul Tisdale’s Exeter welcome Carlisle to St. James’ Park for a huge play-off semi-final second leg. The pair last met on Sunday when they played out a thrilling 3-3 draw up in Cumbria which has set this one up nicely. Exeter would’ve definitely have been the happier of the two sides coming into the second leg. They looked very dangerous going forward and with a big crowd behind them back in Devon they have an excellent chance of progressing through to Wembley. Carlisle make the huge 700 mile round trip to Devon as outsiders but it’s a tag that’ll suit Keith Curle’s men down to the ground. They won here 3-2 on the last day of the regular season and they’ll be quietly confident they can get the job done.

Three defeats in fifteen for Exeter at St. James’ Park

It’s been a crazy season for everyone involved with Exeter City but they have an excellent chance to end it with a Wembley final. They know that one more win will get them over the line and take them into the League Two play-off final, something few expected them to achieve at the start of the campaign. Three months into the season some were calling for Paul Tisdale’s head with the club in the relegation zone, but he’s done a magnificent job turning around their fortunes. He’s made The Grecians one of the most exciting sides in the fourth tier, filled with pace, power & youth which always means their a great watch.

The likes of Ollie Watkins, Joel Grant, Liam McAlinden and David Wheeler epitomise everything positive about City and their games revolve around goals. Only automatic promotion winners Doncaster and Portsmouth scored more goals in the regular League Two season which shows potent they are going forward. David Wheeler has contributed 17 of his sides 75 strikes this season and the 26 year-old has really established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet. He was a big threat in the first leg coming in off the right wing, he’s always looking to break forward and get in the box. He’s their biggest goal threat along with Watkins and we’re backing him to net here at 7/4 with bet365.

Four games without defeat on the road for Carlisle

The visitors have also gone through a rollercoaster of a season and they’ll be hoping they can extend it another couple of weeks. Carlisle have been in a tussle for promotion since August and it looked like they were going to bottle it with just a few games remaining. But a run of six games without defeat catapulted them back into the play-offs on the final day of the season, with a 3-2 victory over Exeter at St. James’ Park the victory that secured a top seven finish. It’s been a good end to the year for Curle’s men are and they’re looking more and more like the side that began the season so strongly.

The Cumbrians are playing with confidence and they’ve rediscovered their shooting boots. They’ve scored in their last eight league games and they’ve hit two more in their last four outings. So it’s safe to say we should be in for a goal fest here. Neither of these sides are particularly fluent in the art of defending and their three meetings this season have produced a jaw dropping sixteen goals – so both teams to score in both halves at 11/1 looks like an excellent bet. Carlisle have already proven they’ve got what it takes to win in Exeter, but with the stakes significantly higher we’re expecting the hosts to come flying out the traps here. We’re backing The Grecians to get the win they need here, but it certainly won’t be easy.
