The magic of the cup returns once again for another season packed full of excitement

England’s longest and proudest competition is back once again for another season of anticipation. The FA Cup always has the potential to throw up surprises, with shock results coming by the bucket load each season. Last years competition was no exception. Arsenal ended up as champions after an enthralling final against Premier League champions Chelsea. An early goal from Alexis Sanchez put the Gunners on the front foot inside the first 5 minutes, and that goal looked as if it was going to be enough to seal victory for the Gunners as the clock ticked closer and closer to ninety. But with fourteen minutes left to play, Diego Costa levelled things up for Chelsea, suggesting extra time would have to be introduced to decide the winner. Aaron Ramsey had other ideas though, the Welshman headed in the winner 10 minutes from time to earn Arsenal their thirteenth FA Cup and maintain their record as the most successful team in the competition.

There were plenty of shocks in the FA Cup last time out, with several teams punching well above their weight. Lincoln City were the team who stole all of the headlines though; the Imps made history by reaching the quarter finals of the competition, beating the likes of Oldham, Ipswich, Brighton AND Burnley to set up a dream tie with eventual winners Arsenal at the Emirates. A 5-0 defeat to the Premier League titans put an end to their astonishing run, but did wonders for the profile of the competition throughout the country. An honourable mention also has to go to Sutton United of the National League, they also managed to reach the fifth round after beating Cheltenham, AFC Wimbledon & Leeds United, but were also knocked out by Arsenal on home soil in a clash that had fans from all over the country on the edge of their seats.

This seasons competition should be stronger than ever, with the addition of players such as Alexandre Lacazette and Bernardo Silva to the Premier League, there should be some fantastic football on display for us all to feast on! This seasons tournament has all the ingredients to be one of the best in years due to the amount of quality and the potential for an upset, we can’t wait!
