Grimsby v Barnet Betting Tips & Odds

In our Grimsby v Barnet betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Overview

Michael Jolley’s Grimsby Town welcome Barnet to Blundell Park on Saturday for a huge game at the wrong end of the League Two table. The Mariners come into it on a high after ending their 20 game winless run with three points against Chesterfield last weekend to give their survival hopes a big boost. It will all be in vain if they fail to come out on top here though, as a defeat will lift their opponents here to within just two points of them. The visitors make the long trip to Cleethorpes down in 23rd position and Martin Allen knows that a defeat could deliver a hammer blow to their hopes of remaining in the Football League. The Mad Dog returned to Barnet for a fourth time just under a month ago and he’s made a big impact, with them winning two of their last three league games to really raise spirits around the Hive.

Mariners eyeing up back-to-back league victories for the first time since December

It’s been very much a season of two halves for Grimsby Town and their supporters. The first part of the campaign the club looked like they could challenge for a second promotion in three seasons with them competing in and around the play-offs. But a shocking run of form the start of December has seen them plummet down the table and in turn get dragged into serious trouble. The Mariners went on a horrific run which saw them fail to win in twenty league games, picking up just six points from a possible sixty which is the worst in the Football League from that period. Russell Slade paid the price for their failure with his job and he’s since been replaced by rookie boss Michael Jolley, who’s made a pretty positive impact. The 40 year-old is desperately trying to instil his philosophy into a side that is devoid of confidence and after a tough start, it looks like that’s starting to happen.

Last week his Mariners side took on Chesterfield in an absolutely massive relegation six pointer at Blundell Park, a game where they simply had to end their baron run. It was a nervy ninety minutes in Lincolnshire with both sides evidently scared of making a mistake, but even the Spireites did which gifted three points to Grimsby. Mitch Rose had nerves of steel to dispatch a last gasp penalty to seal a 1-0 victory and raise the roof at BP. The players weren’t afraid to hide their delight after the full time whistle, but their joy will be short lived if they don’t claim another positive result here against Barnet, who’ll fancy their chances of getting something. But despite all of Grimsby’s struggles this season, they have fared well against sides at the wrong end of the table at Blundell Park winning four out of six against sides currently in the bottom eight.

Is the Great Escape on for Barnet?

Facing the Mariners on Saturday are Barnet who for large periods of the season have looked dead and buried, but the appointment of Martin Allen as their new manager four weeks ago has given them new hope of surviving. After 42 games of the season the Bees have 36 points to their name which leaves them down in 23rd position, making this a must win. Grimsby are currently five points better off in the standings and a defeat here would make them virtually unreachable, with just nine points left to play for after Saturday. The pressure is all on the Bees in Cleethorpes and Martin Allen has gone about this game slightly differently to normal. The 52 year-old has played down his sides chances by claiming that 13 players could miss the trip along with saying ‘I can fully understand how most supporters would not want to make the journey’ – which aren’t the words that his players would want to hear!

Allen is now in his fourth stint as Barnet boss after returning to the club just under a month ago and he’s made a big impact already, winning two of his four games in charge. One of them came last weekend when they recorded a 1-0 win over Forest Green to drag them right back into the relegation dog fight. Alex Nicholls goal just before the interval put them four points behind Rovers and five behind their opponents here, giving them hope of retaining their Football League status. The importance of this game simply cannot be ignored and if they can win it, it will set up an immensely entertaining end to the campaign for the neutrals. But if Allen is right in what he says with injuries they’ll have a huge mountain to climb and their away record doesn’t do much to inspire confidence, with them losing a league high 15 games on their travels this season.
