Grimsby v Luton Betting Tips & Odds

In our Grimsby v Luton betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Russell Slade’s Grimsby Town welcome top of the table Luton Town to Blundell Park on Saturday for a huge game at both ends of the League Two table. The Mariners are currently in free-fall at the moment which has led to intense speculation around the future of Slade. Town have won just three of their previous fourteen games in all competitions and another defeat here against the Hatters could put his position as the clubs manager in real jeopardy. The visitors come into the weekend sitting at the top of the fourth tier and they’re big favourites to go on and claim an eighteenth win of the season. But their form has dropped off slightly, with them losing two of their previous four league games which has allowed the chasing pack to make up some ground on them.

Pressure continues to build on Slade

It’s been a difficult first full season in charge of Grimsby for Russell Slade since returning to the club last April. The 57 year-old has built an incredibly inconsistent side which has flirted with the play-offs at times throughout the campaign, but a shocking festive period and start to the new year has seen them plummet down the table. Town are now down in sixteenth position after 29 games and it’s seen Slade get put under some heavy pressure, with many supporters demanding his head. He was given the dreaded vote of confidence from the board before their draw with Colchester last weekend and a defeat here could ensure that he makes a premature exit from the club, so there’s an awful lot on the line for the Mariners despite them being twelve points off the play-offs.

That draw at Colchester last weekend was a decent result but the travelling supporters would’ve been slightly disappointed after taking the lead in the first half through Derby loanee Charles Vernam – rounding off a lovely team move with a smart finish. Lapse defending just after the restart resulted in an equaliser for the hosts and ensured the Mariners picked up a point, ending a run of four straight defeats. It’s been a real tough time for them and if they’re to get out of this predicament then they need to start making Blundell Park a fortress – something it really hasn’t been over the course of the campaign. Only bottom of the table Barnet (13) have accumulated fewer points than Grimsby (17) this season on home soil which is incredibly concerning, especially coming into a game against a side who’re currently the divisions pace setters.

Four defeats in six for out of sorts Luton

Making the long trip to Lincolnshire are Nathan Jones’ Luton who come into this game under a bit of pressure themselves. The Hatters come into the weekend in wretched form having lost four of their previous six outings in all competitions, resulting in them making exits from both the FA Cup and Checkatrade Trophy, along with allowing the chasing pack in League Two to make up some ground on them. We’re approaching a key stage of the season with the transfer window drawing to a close and it’s going to be interesting to see how they fare here, especially with top scorer Danny Hylton expected to be absent through injury. The forward when off with a hamstring injury against Morecambe last weekend and he’ll be a big miss on the east coast, but they still have more than enough firepower with the likes of James Collins and Luke Berry fit and available.

His early departure after eight minutes last weekend was a big blow but they still managed to find a way to win against the Shrimps, although it wasn’t particularly pretty. A sole Johnny Mullins goal just after the hour mark was enough for them to claim the three points but it was very much a workmanlike performance. Winning when playing badly is the hallmark of a very good side but Nathan Jones will be demanding more here against a Grimsby side that has struggled in front of their own supporters this season. The bulk of Luton’s success this season has come at Kenilworth Road with them winning 34 points there, but on the road they’ve also been a force. Only Swindon (27) have accumulated more points on the road than the Hatters (23) which is very impressive so they’re more than capable of going to Blundell Park and winning.
