Hartlepool v Grimsby Town Betting Preview

In our Hartlepool v Grimsby betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Craig Hignett’s Hartlepool United welcome Grimsby Town to Victoria Park looking to pick up back-to-back home wins for the second time this season. The Pools defeated Morecambe (3-2) in their last home game of 2016 but they’re still in trouble at the wrong end of the table. Their 2-2 draw with Accrington Stanley on Monday has left them just five places above the relegation zone. Grimsby Town make the long trip up north in twelfth and Marcus Bignot’s men are flying at the moment. Their impressive victory against Carlisle at the start of the week was their second in three games and another could send them within two points of the play-offs.

It’s been a miserable season for everyone involved with Hartlepool United to date and they’ll be hoping that 2017 will bring a turnaround in fortunes. The Pools have been around the relegation zone for the majority of the season and Craig Hignett will be demanding a huge second half of the season as the pressure intensifies on him. His side win just one of their last six games and it’s seen them drop down into eighteenth position. They have stopped the rot slightly over the last couple of match days however. A home win over Morecambe 3-2 in their final home game of 2016 was followed up with a draw against Accrington at the start of the week.

It was a tough game at the Crown Ground for Hignett’s men but he’ll be pleased with the battling qualities that his displayed to fight back and claim a point. They twice fell behind in Lancashire and twice fought back first through Padraig Amond then through an 86th minute Scott Harrison equaliser. The Pools will be pleased to be back on home soil however, they’ve won three of their last five in front of their own supporters and it’s form they need to sustain if they’re to climb up the table. Something which will give them confidence is their performance in the reverse fixture back in October when former Mariner Amond bagged a brace in a 3-0 victory.

Grimsby Town make the trip up north in good form and they’ll be confident about their chances here. Marcus Bignot’s men kicked off 2017 in fantastic fashion with one of the results of the season at Carlisle. An Omar Bogle brace and an Adi Yussuf debut goal saw Town end The Cumbrians’ unbeaten home record and it sent out a real statement to their rivals. That result capped off a successful festive period for The Mariners, following on from a 2-0 victory over Accrington and a goalless draw with Gary Bowyer’s in-form Blackpool. Their away form has been impressive over the last few months and we can see it continuing here.

They’ve been beaten just twice on the road since the start of September and they’re well set up to play away from home. They’re solid at the back which is shown by their record of five clean sheets in their eight games on their travels. And in attack they boast League Two’s most talked about player in Omar Bogle. The 23 year-old has taken the division by storm hitting a huge 18 goals already this season and when he performs, his side generally win. No player has scored more goals away from home in the fourth tier than his 11 and we’re backing him to hit the back of the net here (5/4).

Both of these sides come into this clash desperate to get the three points and it’s promises to be an exciting encounter up at Victoria Park. Hartlepool look to have turned a corner slightly in recent weeks and they’ll still have memories from their 3-o win in October fresh in their mind – which proves they’re capable of getting a result. But they’re taking on a strong Grimsby side which includes arguably the best player in Omar Bogle. Hartlepool concede lots of goals and we can see The Mariners taking them apart here, so we’re tipping them to get the three points.
