League One Betting Preview

In our League One betting preview we look at the best bets for two selected matches in the third tier.

Bradford City v Swindon Town

On Saturday afternoon this weekend in League One we see Luke Williams take his Swindon Town side on the trip to Valley Parade to face Stuart McCall’s Bradford City. The teams are at opposite ends of the table, with the hosts battling out for play-offs and the visitors well and truly in a relegation scrap. They met in the reverse fixture back in November when Bradford travelled to the County Ground. Bradford should have taken the lead after nine minutes when Marc McNulty found himself in on goal but he fired his attempt wide. However it was the hosts who took the lead after twenty minutes when they were awarded a free-kick from 30 yards out. Anton Rodgers stepped up to curl the ball into the top corner to open his goalscoring account for the season. James Hanson had a chance in the 82nd minute to earn his side a point but he could only direct his header onto the woodwork.

Can Bradford steal second spot?

The home side Bradford City head into the visit of Swindon Town knowing that if they are to have a chance of clinching an automatic promotion spot then these are the sort of games where they can’t afford a slip-up. After spending the majority of the season in and around the top six, it would be a disaster for them not to at least qualify for the play-offs. The title looks pretty much done and dusted with Sheffield United running away with it, but second place is more than up for grabs. The current situation sees them sat in fifth place in the table, four points adrift of Fleetwood Town in second and six ahead of Southend United in seventh. The Bantams are the only team in the division who are let to lose a home league fixture, but with 12 draws from 19, they know they’ll need to start picking up more three points. On Tuesday evening they drew 1-1 away at Charlton Athletic curtesy of a Timothee Dieng header.

Can Swindon stay up?

The away side Swindon Town go into the trip to Bradford City knowing that they seriously need to begin picking up some points or they will be playing in the fourth tier of English football next term. They finished in a disappointing 16th place last time round, but they would snap your hands off for that right now. They currently find themselves sat third bottom in 22nd place, seven points away from safety. It’s vital they come away with at least a point here or they could be left behind. Port Vale who are a place and two points above them, have a huge three games in hand over them. The Robins have lost their last three on the bounce and are desperate for something from this one. On Tuesday they were beaten 4-2 by league leaders Sheffield United.

Southend United v Walsall

On Saturday afternoon this weekend in League One we see Jon Whitney take his Walsall side on the trip to Roots Hall to face Phil Brown’s  Southend United. Both of these two are very hopeful of a top six finish, so will be desperate to take some points off a direct rival. They met in the reverse fixture back in November when Southend made the journey to the Bescot Stadium. Walsall hit the woodwork seven minutes in as Erhun Oztumer’s near-post cross was met by Andreas Makris’ flick but came back off the upright. But Southend twice came close as Nile Ranger left the Saddlers’ defence in his wake on a 50-yard solo run but was denied by goalkeeper Neil Etheridge. The Saddlers then struck the woodwork for a second time as Scott Laird’s deflected cross clipped the top of the bar. It was just one of those days where nothing was going right and it finished goalless.

A frustrating day at the office

Shrimpers look good for a play-off finish

The home side Southend United head into the visit of Walsall knowing that this is the weekend they can break back into the play-offs with a win here. They had a shocking start to their season, but have seriously turned things around and now have their eyes set on a shot at promotion. The current situation sees them sat just one place and one point outside the play-offs in seventh place. The Shrimpers have been superb at Roots Hall for the past few months. After winning just once in ten games, they’ve now lost just once in the following fifteen League One fixtures. That defeat came to Sheffield United who are running away with the league title. On Saturday they won 2-0 away at Coventry City thanks to goals from Nile Ranger and Ryan Leonard.

A win would be huge here for the Saddlers

The away side Walsall go into the trip to Southend United knowing that this would be huge for them if they were able to take some points off a team just above them in the table. They currently find themselves sat in 9th place in the table, five points adrift of the play-offs and four of their opponents. So if they were to lose here then they would leave themselves with a mountain to climb in order to earn a top six finish. The Saddlers have struggled to pick up wins on the road recently. From their last seven away games they’ve only lost twice, but haven’t won a single one of them. They’d be more than happy to take a point here but three would be huge. On Tuesday they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by second place Fleetwood Town.

A narrow defeat to Fleetwood
