Promotion Contenders

League One looks wide open once again with several teams harbouring ambitions of promotion. The clear favourites for the title are the recently relegated Blackburn Rovers. After a seriously disappointing campaign in the Championship they look like they intend to make an immediate return to the second tier with promotion at the first time of asking. They have made several seriously impressive signings such as Peter Whittingham from Cardiff and Bradley Dack from Gillingham.

They will have competition however, with another relegated club from the Championship Wigan Athletic who are second favourites. The last time they were relegated to League One they were crowned champions in the their first season back. A surprise third favourite is Portsmouth, the bookies clearly think they have a chance of back to back titles. However they have however lost their manager Paul Cook to rivals Wigan. The bookmakers are also tipping Bradford City to have a strong season, they’ve lost in the play-offs for two years on the bounce and will be hoping that it’s third time lucky.

The Rest of the Field

At the other end, Shrewsbury Town and Oldham Athletic are both predicted to struggle and are early favourites for relegation. The Shrews finished in 18th place this year and are expecting to seriously struggle again this time round. The Latics are the longest serving team in League One and they somehow manage to keep surviving year on year when they look down and out. John Sheridan seems to work miracles with them every time he comes back to the club and he’ll be hoping to do the same this year. He usually joins half way through when they are deep in trouble, but this time he’s had a full pre-season with them to prepare how he wants.

The division does have some good striking talent and the top scorer markets will prove interesting when they become available. Kieffer Moore and Will Grigg could well prove to be the most deadly strike partnership in the division. While Charlie Wyke will have his first full season at Bradford City and will be looking to be in the goals. The stand out player has to be Blackburn’s Danny Graham, who should have too much for League One defences if he can keep himself fit.
