League Two Betting Preview

In our League Two betting preview we look at the best possible bets from our two selected matches in the fourth tier.

Mansfield v Carlisle

Two out of form sides with promotion aspirations meet at Field Mill as Mansfield take on Carlisle.

The Stags’ play-off hopes are looking bleak

It’s been a rough few weeks for Steve Evans and his Mansfield side who’ve slipped out the top seven. The Stags have won just one of their previous seven games in League Two which has seen them drop down into tenth position. Their play-off ambitions are now not in their hands and Evans will need a big final nine games of the season from his side. They come into this clash on the back of consecutive 2-0 defeats at the hands of Plymouth & Colchester and their fans will be demanding a big response on home soil. Their record at Field Mill will give them plenty of confidence though, with them picking up 30 points from 19 games – only six sides have accumulated more in League Two this season. But something which will concern them is their lack of goals having failed to score in their previous four league games. But their opponents have a leaky back four and they should be given opportunities to hit the back of the net, it’s just a case of whether the likes of Matt Green and Danny Rose can take advantage.

Steve Evans has a big job on his hands getting Mansfield into the play-offs

Carlisle have a fight on their hands to get back in the top three

The visitors have also suffered a slump at the wrong time of the season, with their hopes of winning automatic promotion looking unlikely. The Cumbrians have won just three of their previous fourteen league games which has seen Portsmouth leapfrog them into that all important final promotion spot. And they can’t afford to dwell on that recent form as they could quite easily fall out the top seven if they continue to deliver under-par performances. In their last outing they managed to stop the rot slightly with a goalless draw against fellow promotion hopefuls Luton Town, ending a run of four successive defeats. It was definitely a step in the right direction for them but they need to improve here, despite facing an out of form Stags side. They’ve won just six of their eighteen away games this season and we can see them setting up to frustrate the hosts. A draw looks like the most likely outcome here as neither side will want to lose and it’s available at a solid price of 5/2 with William Hill.

Stevenage v Portsmouth

Two promotion hopefuls meet at Broadhall Way as Darren Sarll’s Stevenage take on Portsmouth.

Stevenage have won their last six in front of their own supporters

It’s been a topsy turvy campaign for Stevenage and their rookie boss Darren Sarll. The 34 year-old took some heavy criticism from the clubs supporters earlier on in the campaign when his side were facing the prospect of relegation from the Football League. But an incredible run of eight wins from ten games has seen them fly up the table into promotion reckoning. They’re currently in sixth and despite being seven points behind their opponents here, they’ll be confident that they can sneak into the top three how they’re playing. Their home form in particular has improved dramatically, they’ve won their last six in front of their own supporters and they’re scoring lots of goals. The man grabbing all the headlines for them is forward Matt Godden who recently scooped the Player of the Month award in February. He’s hit 19 league goals this season and he’s without a doubt their biggest threat going forward. Eight of those goals have come in his last nine appearances and we’re backing him to bag here in a high scoring game (9/5).

Portsmouth are on course to finally end their four year stay in League Two

It’s been an awful demise through the Football League for Portsmouth but it looks like they could finally be set to start their climb back up through the divisions. Paul Cook’s side are up in third position coming into match day 38 and they’re hitting form just at the right time of the season. Only Accrington have picked up more points in their previous six games than Pompey and Stevenage will be weary of the threat they pose. They come into this encounter fresh from dismantling Grimsby 4-0 at Fratton Park in midweek to seal a third successive league victory and they’ll be confident that they can make it four here. Pompey’s strong run of form has seen them close the gap on south coast rivals Plymouth to just four points and the pair lock horns in a few weeks time, so it’s essential they continue to pick up points if they’re to leapfrog The Pilgrims.
