League Two

The new League Two season is underway and it’s all set up to be one of the most exciting in recent memory. Last year saw Portsmouth, Plymouth and Doncaster win automatic promotion to League One – with Pompey stealing the title in dramatic circumstances on the final day of the campaign. They ended a four year stay in the fourth tier and they’ll be looking to build on that as they march on towards the Championship. The automatic promotion races looked tied up for the majority of the campaign, but the race for the play-offs was one of the most exciting stories of the 16/17 season.

On the final day of the season there was eleven teams who still had a chance of making it in there with Luton, Exeter, Carlisle, Blackpool (finished 4th-7th), Colchester, Wycombe, Stevenage, Cambridge, Mansfield, Accrington and Grimsby all looking to get in the end of season lottery. It was an entertaining final day which saw Blackpool swoop in for the final spot in dramatic circumstances, finishing just a point ahead of Colchester before going on to win promotion back to League One at the first time of asking.

Promotion Hopefuls

It was a fantastic campaign and we’re expecting the same and even more here. The sides who missed out on promotion have strengthened significantly with the likes of Luton, Carlisle and Mansfield in particular looking more than capable of promotion. Steve Evans’ Mansfield are the early seasons favourites, with their moves in the transfer market making them serious contenders. Evans’ experience has seen them bring in proven quality and you feel whoever finishes above them are likely to get promoted.

Joining Mansfield at the top of the outright odds are Exeter, Colchester, Cambridge and Wycombe. They’re all being backed to do some serious damage this season. They’re joined by six new faces in the division. Four came down from League One in the form of Coventry City, Swindon Town, Port Vale and Chesterfield. Who’re all high up in the promotion markets. Coventry have had their fair share of problems over the last few years but they come in as third favourites to win the league title, which shows how big the impact is that Mark Robins has had at the club.

The Rest of the Field

At the bottom end it is Morecambe who are predicted to be relegated this season. Along with Newport County and Crawley Town who’re also predicted for a season of struggle. Those clubs don’t have the same financial muscle as some of the bigger clubs and they all had poor 16/17 seasons. It is a difficult division to predict however – few would have said Accrington and Wimbledon would have made the play-offs last season so the bookmakers odds at this stage can be a little deceiving.
