Marseille v Atletico Madrid Betting Preview

In our Marseille v Atletico Madrid betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Wednesday night sees this season’s Europa League final, where Rudi Garcia’s Marseille lock horns with Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais. Marseille had to get past a lot of teams to get here, with their encounters up against Athletic Bilbao, RB Leipzig and Salzburg looking practically impossible, but they made sure to cement their place in the final, where they look to cause another shock against a far fiercer opponent. Atletico Madrid have been the favourites to win the Europa League since day one and need to show their dominance again. It’s expected they’ll win but they’ve certainly played easier sides.

Playing at Lyon’s Parc Olympique Lyonnais could be a blessing or a curse for Marseille

Marseille could find a home advantage from playing in France

With it being something of a surprise to see Marseille making it this far in the tournament, they’ve shocked a lot of people this season, and they’re unlikely to stop any time soon. Marseille have always been one of the biggest and most successful clubs in France but saw a slight decline which had them falling behind other sides and losing star players. That all changed through the arrival of Rudi Garcia in 2016, bringing with him players that are capable of making a genuine impact. Winning the Europa League would be an indication that his plan is coming into fruition but they’re certainly up against the tide.

Despite having a side made up of Dimitri Payet, Kostas Mitroglou, Aymen Abdennour, Clinton N’Jie, Luiz Gustavo and Adil Rami, it’s former Newcastle United flop Florian Thauvin who’s led from the front this season. His clinical nature on goal and contributions from the flanks have provided the sort of unpredictability that makes life difficult for even the stronger sides in Europe. Marseille have caused some shocks in the Europa League campaign, including in their last game with Salzburg, who don’t sound like much but are impressively organised. The French side are given an advantage of playing in their home country, with just one defeat in the last twenty-three as the home side, but some frustrations coming from being in opposition side Lyon’s grounds.

Diego Simeone’s Atletico have been favourite since day one

A whopping sixty percent of punters who are putting money on the winner of this year’s Europa League final are backing Atletico Madrid, and there’s more than just one reason why. They’ve shown immense organisation in practically every game they’ve played this season, which has been enough to move them up to second in La Liga, ahead of local derby rivals Real Madrid by a three point lead. Although they’ve gone under the radar a lot of the time, their quality is clear and it’s been enough to push them through to the final of this tournament, where they’re predicted to scoop their first trophy since taking the Spanish Supercup in 2015.

Rumours continue to highlight Antoine Griezmann’s predicted move to either Barcelona or Manchester United and he’s been as prolific as ever this season, scoring twenty-three goals between La Liga and the Europa League as well as a further eleven assists overall. As if they weren’t already solid enough with him, the return of former striker Diego Costa has had a positive impact too, with him netting five goals and three assists since coming in over January. Atletico have only lost one of their last six, and have lost just once in the Europa League this season, making them extremely likely to conquer their opposing side here.
