MLS Betting Preview – 04/09/16

In our MLS betting preview we look at what could be the best possible bets between the chosen games from this weekends action.

FC Dallas v Portland Timbers

This all Western Conference clash sees two clubs with playoff glory firmly in their sights go head to head at the Toyota Stadium in the Lone Star State of Texas.

FC Dallas come into this this matchup boasting a home record that sits far and above any of their rivals, you have to go all the way back to August of 2015 to find the last time they were defeated on their home turf. The Toro have taken 31 points out of a possible 39 in front of their home support as they have taken on, and often beaten, franchises with budgets that dwarf theirs. Much credit must go to Head Coach Oscar Pareja who has built a side that is solid from the back to the front, a team so solid that they are on track to secure a second consecutive first place finish in a conference containing the free-spending and star-studded LA Galaxy. Dallas’ success will please many old school MLS fans who don’t like the big money that has come into the league, they have no ‘star’ players as such and if you were to look at their roster it’s likely the only name you’d recognise is that of former Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa. Their unbeaten home record goes hand in hand with an entertaining style of football which has seen the Texas side have registered at least one goal in each of their thirteen home matches this season, averaging two goals a game.

The Timbers are clinging on to the sixth and final playoff position as it stands as a defeat in this one and a San Jose Earthquake win would mean they’d only occupy the position on goal difference, a highly precarious situation to be in. The fact that Caleb Porter’s side haven’t won away since December 2015 and are facing a team with the best home record in both conferences makes for fairly grim readers for any Timbers fans. There is a real possibility that the MLS Cup Champions of last year will fall at the first hurdle of their title defence as a playoff position looks increasingly hard to obtain for them. Led by Liam Ridgewell, a name familiar to Premier League fans, Portland also lack recognised international talent in their roster, which seems to have caught up with them this season. Having a solid team of good players is fine when the team is playing well but a poor run of results leading to confidence plummeting can be catastrophic and a with no top class talent to come up with moments of magic, this can spiral downward very quickly. This is the path the Timbers are on at the moment and they need to do something soon to get back on an upward curve. But it would take a performance that better teams than them have failed to produce against Dallas for that change to happen in this game.

LA Galaxy v Columbus Crew

This intra-conference clash pits Western Conference high flyers LA Galaxy against Eastern Conference struggles Columbus Crew who travel cross country for this fixture.

The Galaxy are in a bit of a rut at the moment, they are now seven games without a win in all competitions, looking tired and out of ideas of late. This poor run follows a ten game unbeaten streak and sums up the inconsistency of many MLS sides as form hits peaks and troughs repeatedly throughout the season. LA haven’t lost in the league at the StubHub Centre since October of 2015 but their squad has been worn thin recently with injuries and transfers taking their toll. Gerrard, Van Damme and Zarades are all injured, Nigel de Jong transferred to Galatasaray last week and veteran striker Robbie Keane will be unlikely to start following his international exploits against Oman midweek. As a result there is now a real lack of senior players at the disposal of Bruce Arena and the pressure will be weighing heavily on the shoulders of Giovanni Dos Santos to deliver a match winning performance. There is a real possibility that the Galaxy’s unbeaten home record will come to an end in this fixture as the number of fixtures begins to catch up with their ageing squad.

The Columbus Crew’s playoff hopes are holding on by a thread as they currently sit second bottom in their conference, six points off the sixth and final playoff position. There is a saving grace, however, as they have two games in hand over their playoff rivals but nothing less than victories in there next few games will surely put the final nail in the coffin. Their away form has been costly, winning just two of their last fifteen away matches but this fixture provides a rare chance for Gregg Berhalter’s side to pick up three points at a ground where most sides see a draw as a great result. Midfielder Ethan Finlay has chipped in with a handy four goals in his last four games, helping his side to win points which have kept their playoff dreams, albeit faint ones, alive. The Crew will be fired up for this one and will smell blood so don’t be surprised to see LA Galaxy’s impressive home record be tarnished after this match.
