MLS Betting Preview – 11/09/16
In our MLS betting preview we look at what could be the best possible bets between the chosen games from this weekends action.
FC Dallas v Colorado Rapids
This all Western Conference clash sees two clubs with their sights firmly set on playoff glory go head to head at the Toyota Stadium in the ‘Lone Star State’ of Texas.
It seems Oscar Pareja’s FC Dallas are determined to head into the playoffs full steam ahead as they have extended their lead at the top of the conference to a dominant seven points. They have turned their home field into a fortress and are undefeated in front of their supporters in the MLS since the beginning of August 2015, picking up sixteen wins and five draws in the process. With a roster that boasts probably only one name that you’re likely to recognise, that of former Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa, many outside of the MLS loop are surprised by their lofty position in the table. But, barring them throwing away their lead at the top, this will be Dallas’ second consecutive first place finish in their conference only this time The Toros will be hoping to go one step further and clinch playoff silverware. Dallas have a supreme goalscoring prowess at home, they’ve registered at least once in every match and average two goals when they play at the Toyota Stadium. Perhaps what makes their success even more surprising is their lack of a star striker, with their top scorer being midfielder Michael Barrios with eight goals.
Colorado Rapids come into this fixture following a disappointing run of results with no win each of their last four MLS outings, not exactly what you want when you’re visiting one of the MLS’s most efficient and ruthless sides. On top of this, Pablo Mastroeni’s side have managed a meagre two away wins all season. Contrasting to Dallas, Colorado’s roster does contain some names you’ll be familiar with but in a ‘blast-from-the-past’ way rather than a ‘how did they persuade him to go to the MLS in his prime’. Irishmen Kevin Doyle and Shaun St. Ledger and USMNT veterans Tim Howard and Jermaine Jones all provide a wealth of experience to the Rapid’s ranks. They’ll be without Jones and St. Ledger for this one due to injuries, multiplying the difficulty of the task to come away with even a single point from this game. An FC Dallas win looks inevitable in this one when all stats and other factors are examined and they’re priced at a very appealing 4/6, certainly one to pop in your acca for the weekend!

LA Galaxy v Orlando City
This cross country intra-conference clash pits Western Conference high flyers LA Galaxy against Eastern Conference playoff hopefuls Orlando City in what promises to be a highly entertaining fixture. It’ll be broadcast live on Sky at midnight on Monday.
The Galaxy have the chance to move into second place with a victory in this match, something they’ll be keen to secure as it will most likely give them a favourable draw in the first playoff round. This match is set to be an iconic one as it’s the first game since all-time MLS goalscorer and LA Galaxy legend Landon Donovan announced he was coming out of retirement and resigned for his former club. It’s unlikely he’ll start but with the plague of injuries that has hit the squad of late it’s more than likely he’ll make an appearance off the bench if he’s included in the squad. Bruce Arena’s side have been in inspired form at the StubHub Centre this season and last, not losing a match there since October of 2015. They will be without Jelle van Damme for this one, though, with Keane and Gerrard both doubts due to injury. Giovanni Dos Santos has really stepped up to the plate in the absence of the other big names, scoring four in four which takes his tally to an impressive twelve for the season. Losing just one in their last fourteen MLS fixtures, the Galaxy fans will be expecting nothing less than three points here.
Orlando are currently clinging on to the sixth and final playoff place in the Eastern Conference with just two points separating them and seventh place DC United. The Lions won’t come into this full of confidence as they’ve won just three on the road all season, but one of these wins did come in their last outing against Drogba’s Montreal Impact which saw them run away with a 4-1 victory. City will be looking to Balon D’Or winner Kaka for inspiration following his brace against Montreal. The Brazilian has shown no signs of slowing down with age, scoring eight and assisting eight so far this term. If Gerrard does feature it’ll be a far cry from where the pair last went head-to-head the 2007 Champions League final in Athens. 21 year old Canadian Cyle Larin has been a revelation since his first appearance in the purple shirt. He’s scored an impressive thirty times in his fifty two matches. Thanks to Larin, Orlando boast the second best attacking record away from home this season, finding the back of the net nineteen times in total. This looks set to be an open game with the ball going from end to end meaning chances galore for Dos Santos and Larin so getting them both to score at 13/2 could be a clever pick.
