MLS Betting Preview – 18/09/16

In our MLS betting preview we look at what could be the best possible bets between the chosen games from this weekends action.

New York City FC vs FC Dallas

In this intra-conference clash of the titans we see third place in Eastern Conference face first place in the Western Conference at the iconic Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. If both teams progress in the playoffs then this could potentially be a dress rehearsal of the MLS Cup final.

Patrick Viera’s NYCFC side will come into this one full of confidence having won their last five matches on home turf, including impressive victories against LA Galaxy and the Red Bulls, while netting a clinical fourteen times in the process. Thanks to this run of form City have surged up the table and have first place firmly in their sights as they are just two points off it. It was a shaky start to the season for Viera as he won just one of his first nine home matches of the season, leading to many fans to question the appointment of such an inexperienced manager, especially in a league as unique as the MLS. But thanks to veterans Frank Lampard and David Villa, Viera’s job security has continued to rise throughout the season. Premier League legend Lampard put a tough start to life in the MLS behind him and has since embarked on one of the best runs of form in his entire career, seeing him score twelve in his last fourteen outings. When you add Villa’s seventeen goals to that total, it’s easy to see why the newest side in the MLS are where they are in the table.

FC Dallas will be looking to bounce back in style following their shock 1-0 loss at the hands of the Colorado Rapids in their last league fixture. This was the Texas sides’ first defeat at home since August of 2015 so it’ll be interesting to see how that’s affected them. Oscar Pareja’s side currently have a four point cushion at the top of the conference ahead of the glittering LA Galaxy and they’ll be looking to extend that gap in this one as they chase a second consecutive first placed finish. However, previous away matches against the stronger sides in the league have seen them come unstuck as they’ve failed to win on the road against any team in the top five of both conferences. But they will smell blood as they go into this heavyweight class as New York City have the worst defence at home across both conferences, conceding twenty four goals and keeping only three clean sheets.

Toronto FC vs New York Red Bulls

It’s first vs second in this monumental Eastern Conference matchup in the biggest match of the MLS season so far.

Toronto will be confident as they approach this game having lost just once at home all season, a record which has helped them on their way to a two point lead atop their conference with a game in hand over their competitors. It’s not all good news for Greg Vanney’s side, though, as they will once again be without the best MLS signing of all time, Sebastian Giovinco. The Italian picked up an injury at the end of August which looks likely to rule him out until at least the end of September. The Atomic Ant has once again been instrumental to the Canadian outfit’s success, registering sixteen goals so far, despite experiencing an eight game goal drought, one of the worst of his career. It’ll be up to former Sunderland player and USMNT veteran Jose Altidore to step up and minimalise the impact of Giovinco’s absence and he’s made a good start, scoring once and picking up an assist in TFC’s match away at the Chicago Fire. A win would put them five points clear, giving them plenty of leeway as Regular Season draws to a close, providing added motivation for The Reds who will roared home by a passionate crowd.

The Red Bulls have been unbeatable of late, going fifteen games in all competitions without a loss. Bradley Wright-Phillips takes much of the credit for this record as his goals have won his side numerous extra points over the course of the season. He has chalked up a career best nine goals in his last eight outings, taking his season total to a Golden Boot table topping eighteen. One name that gets hardly any attention outside of America is that of Sacha Kljestan. This will be the American midfielder’s sixtieth match for the Red Bulls since his transfer from Belgian side Anderlecht in 2015. He has proved to be an assist machine, providing fifteen of them so far this term as well as chipping in with five goals along the way. Toronto’s home for won’t phase Jay Heaps’ men as they’re unbeaten in their last five away matches, four of which were 2-2 draws. Goals are a common theme in Red Bull away match and an early one in this match could spark a goalfest as both teams will be desperate to get the win which would see them take first place in the conference.
