Norwich v Barnsley

Norwich v Barnsley Betting Preview

In our Norwich v Barnsley betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Managerless Norwich welcome Barnsley to Carrow Road looking to keep their slim play-off hopes alive. The Canaries are currently eight points behind sixth placed Sheffield Wednesday but they’re without a win in six league games. That run of results saw manager Alex Neil given his marching orders after two years at the club which has left his former number two Alan Irvine in temporary control whilst the board search for his replacement. Their opponents Barnsley make the trip to Norfolk three points worse off than their opponents and they too have struggled to deliver any consistency in recent weeks. Their winless run currently stands at five games and it would take some effort to finish in the top six.

Norwich’s play-off hopes hanging by a thread

It’s been a difficult year for Norwich City and their supporters after suffering relegation form the Premier League last May. They came into the Championship expected to make an instant return to the top flight but things really haven’t gone to plan. After a good start where they competed in the top two, they’ve dropped off since with them sitting in mid-table for the majority of the campaign. That saw promotion winning manager Alex Neil sacked and they now have a real fight on their hands to climb into the top six and go up. As it stands they’re currently eight off the pace and they have some very difficult games coming up, so it’s going to take something extraordinary for them to do it.

The Canaries are currently on a six game winless run which has seen them throw away points in games they were expected to win easily. A defeat against Burton (1-1) combined with draws against the likes of Bristol City (1-1) and most recently Blackburn (2-2) have seen them fall well off the pace and they need to improve considerably here. But something which will give them confidence is their record in front of their own supporters – only five sides have accumulated more points than Norwich’s 37. And in Cameron Jerome they have a forward who’s lethal at this level. He has 14 for the season which includes seven in his last nine and we’re backing him to net here (6/5).

Barnsley limping towards the finish line

Barnsley’s season is also one that promised an awful lot after an incredible start following promotion last term. The Tykes were one of the most exciting sides in the second tier, scoring lots of goals and their side was packed full of excellent young home grown players. But January was a cruel month for the club which saw them lose three of their prized assets in James Bree, Conor Hourihane and Sam Winnall along with Marley Watkins handing in a transfer request. They managed to retain the latter but things haven’t been the same since. Barnsley are struggling to take games by the scruff of the neck like before and it’s seen their play-off hopes fade away.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Ipswich saw their poor form continue with them winning just one of their previous nine league games. Watkins scored their only goal of the game on the hour mark and it looked like they were going to secure a much needed three points, but a last minute Tom Lawrence effort saw the visitors steal a point. It’ll be interesting to see how much impact that last gasp sickener has on Paul Heckingbottom’s men and we’re expecting them to find it tough against Norwich. The hosts will be fired up for this one with a potential new manager waiting in the wings and we can see them grabbing the three points. They’re priced at 2/1 to get the victory with both sides getting on the scoresheet which looks like a solid bet.

Barnsley will need the likes of Tom Bradshaw on top form if they’re to get a result here
