Plymouth Argyle v Stevenage Betting Preview – 14/01/17

In our Plymouth Argyle v Stevenage betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Derek Adams’ Plymouth Argyle welcome Stevenage to Home Park looking pick up their third home win in four games. The Pilgrims are currently second in League Two, four points behind leaders Doncaster Rovers. But they do have a game in hand on their rivals so it’s important that they pick up maximum points here. Stevenage make the 500 mile round trip to Devon 15 points below their opponents and they’re not in the best of form – losing four of their last six.

It’s been a positive season to date for Derek Adams and Plymouth Argyle. They’ve spent virtually the entire campaign up in the top three and they look like a safe bet for automatic promotion. The Pilgrims are a solid, organised side that packs a punch in attack and they’re a very dangerous opponent. They have personnel capable of hurting any side in the fourth tier and they’ll be confident that they can pick up the three points here in front of their own supporters. Argyle were last in action on Sunday when they made the trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool in the FA Cup, producing a disciplined performance to hold The Reds to a surprise 0-0 draw.

It was always going to be a tough game for Derek Adams’ men but they produced a great performance to hold the Premier League side in front of 8500 travelling Argyle supporters to secure a lucrative replay. It was a welcome distraction from the rigours of League Two and they’ll be eager to get back to winning ways here. Adams’ played his strongest XI at Anfield and we’re expecting no difference here as they look to close the gap on Doncaster. Their recent form in the league hasn’t been too bad, winning three of their last five. But their last game in the fourth tier ended in a defeat at the hands of Barnet (1-0) so they’ll be eager to put on a show for their supporters.

Stevenage’s season has been a topsy turvy one to say the least, yo-yoing between the top and bottom half of the table throughout. Manager Darren Sarll is yet to discover the formula for consistency but they have proven that they’re capable of getting big results against some of the divisions better sides. They’ve already beaten the likes of Portsmouth (2-1), Barnet (2-1) & Luton (2-1) which shows that they have decent pedigree, but they need to produce those kind of results and performances on a regular basis if they’re to climb up the table. As it stands they’re currently in 13th and six points away from a spot in the play-offs.

Unlike Plymouth, Boro were in league action last weekend and they managed to end a run of three successive defeats. They defeated Newport County (3-1) at Broadhall Way courtesy of a Matt Godden hat-trick to seal just a fourth home win of the campaign. Their form in front of their own supporters has been their achilles heel this season, with their performances on the road being at a considerably higher level. Only six teams have picked up more points than Boro away from home this season and before losing to Doncaster in their first away game of 2017, they had won their last six on their travels – so their more than capable of upsetting the odds here.

This is a big game for both of these sides as they look to build some positive momentum. The Pilgrims come into this clash as favourites with home advantage and we can see them having too much for the visitors here. Their trip to Anfield would’ve taken a lot of out them but we’re backing them to grab their third home win in four games. We’re expecting the likes of Jake Jervis and Graham Carey to cut through this Stevenage defence at will so there should be plenty of goals. We’re backing the hosts to win (11/10) which will put some more pressure on leaders Doncaster as the race for promotion hots up.
