Plymouth v Portsmouth Betting Tips & Odds

In our Plymouth v Portsmouth betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Plymouth Argyle will host Portsmouth on Saturday. The game has been labeled the dockyard derby due to the large navy ports both cities have. Until recent years this game hasn’t been seen as much of a rivalry but with both clubs playing at the same level it has began to be built up as one. They both gained promotion from League Two last season finishing first and second and met in the playoffs the year before that. This season they’re both still in the running for the playoffs and three points for either club will be huge. It appears that it will be another close game between the two south coast clubs with the reverse fixture finishing 1-0 in Portsmouth’s favour.

Plymouth Argyle have won six in a row at Home Park

Plymouth Argyle’s remarkable season continues against Portsmouth on Saturday. They’ve made Home Park a fortress in the second half of this season with teams struggling to take points away in Devon. The Pilgrims have now won eleven of their last twelve games their and are on a six game winning streak at Home Park, they haven’t won seven in are at home since the 2001/02 season. Derek Adams has got his side playing great football and will feel like they can beat anyone at this point. Coming up against Portsmouth, another playoff rival, could see them strengthen their grip on a playoff place with a win. However, this fixture always tends to be closely fought and its expected to be no different on Saturday.

The Plymouth Argyle promotion winning squad hasn’t had too many addition to it throughout the season, with Graham Carey still the main vocal point. It is still very much the core group of players that finished second in League Two. One addition that Derek Adams has made is tricky attacking midfielder Ruben Lameiras. Lameiras rarely featured during the first half of the season but has taken his opportunities with both hands. He is now one of the first players on the team sheet giving the Plymouth Argyle attack another dimension. Graham Carey is still the main man at Home Park and has now got double figures in both goals and assists for a third consecutive season. Neither team will want to lose this game but home advantage may swing it Plymouth Argyle’s way.

 Portsmouth unbeaten in five

Portsmouth will be coming into this game full of confidence. They’ve won four of their last five games and haven’t lost to Plymouth Argyle in their last three meetings. They won the fixture earlier in the season 1-0, with Kal Naismith getting an early goal and Portsmouth seeing the game out. However, this time around they’ll be coming up against a Plymouth Argyle team that are on a great run. Portsmouth are on level points with the teams in the playoff, currently missing out on goal difference. They weren’t expecting to challenge at the beginning of the season but now at this point it would be a disappointment to miss out.

Portsmouth haven’t been the free scoring team they’ve been in the past. Kenny Jacket has been able to get his team to win games but not by a big goal margin. This season they’ve had the fewest different goal scorers of any team in League One, with ten. Brett Pitman has been the main man for them when it comes to goals. He has scored 21 goals so far which is almost half of the teams total. When he was out injured earlier in the season they really struggled. However, he is back now and in great form for the run in. He has scored seven goals in his last five games and will cause the Pilgrims defence real problems. A win here can see them leap frog Plymouth Argyle and move into the playoff places.
