Porto v Liverpool Betting Tips & Odds

In our Porto v Liverpool betting preview we look at what could possibly be the best bets between the two sides.

Jurgen Klopp takes his Liverpool side to Portugal this Wednesday to face Group G runners-up Porto. The visitors have looked fairly solid this season in both the Premier League and Champions League, they topped Group E ahead of Sevilla, Spartak Moscow and Maribor. Porto by contrast had to settle for second place, behind Turkish giants Besiktas who endured a surprisingly strong qualifying campaign. The visitors head into this clash as favourites, but know it’s not going to be an easy task considering their opponents have lost just one of their previous 24 games in all competitions.

Hosts outstanding on home soil

Porto haven’t lost a game at the Estádio do Dragão since the 13th of September, so carry plenty of confidence into this battle with Liverpool. The Portuguese giants have been outstanding in the league this season, they are yet to lose a single game in the Primeira Liga and now sit top of the pile on 55 points with a game in hand over second place Benfica. Sérgio Conceição’s men have been prolific in front of goal this term, scoring 53 goals in just 21 games and that’s largely been thanks to Cameroonian front man Vincent Aboubakar. The 26-six-year old striker has 20 goals to his name in the league and Europe this term, making him the undisputed danger man for Porto here. Aboubakar netted 5 goals in 6 games in the group stages so will be looking to add to that impressive tally here. If you can see him getting on the scoresheet FIRST in this clash, that’s priced at odds of 5/1 with BetVictor!

Defensively Porto were poor in qualifying. The Dragões conceded 10 goals in just six matches in Group G, so will have to tighten things up at the back in this fixture against a free-scoring Liverpool outfit if they’re to progress any further in the competition. The hosts only managed to keep one clean sheet in the group stages, so it’ll be interesting to see how they line up tactically against the Reds here to prevent them scoring. Although Liverpool fans will be happy they avoided one of the European giants in their first knockout game, Porto will not be an easy side to overcome; especially in their own backyard. The hosts have made the Estádio do Dragão a fortress in recent years, with such an intimidating atmosphere for opponents to compete with on European nights. With all that considered, could an upset be on the cards here?

Liverpool the favourites

The visitors will go into this fixture as the favourites but made hard work of qualifying for the knockout stages back in December. After looking in control for the majority of their European campaign, the Reds threw away a three goal lead to draw with Sevilla in their penultimate group game back at the end of November. That draw ensured Liverpool’s chances of qualification were left hanging in the balance ahead of their final clash with Spartak Moscow at Anfield. A 7-0 drubbing over the Russian’s put all fears of elimination to bed however, and made certain Jurgen Klopp’s men would go through to the knockout stages as group winners ahead of second place Sevilla, who could only manage a 1-1 draw away to Maribor in their final game.

Liverpool have been emphatic in front of goal this season. With the likes of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane scoring 54 goals between them in both the Premier and Champions League, they’re one Europe’s most exciting teams to watch at the moment. The visitors scored an astonishing 23 goals in just six games throughout the group stages, which included not one, but two 7-0 decapitations of Maribor and Spartak Moscow. They only conceded six times as well, so it will be highly interesting to see if Porto will be able to break them down here. Jurgen Klopp’s men will take some positive momentum into this Wednesday’s clash with Porto after beating Southampton away from home on Sunday. Goals from Salah and Firmino, each assisted by the other means that they have now lost just one league game in their last 18, a statistic that makes them one of the most in-form teams in the Champions League at the moment.

Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino have 45 goals between them in the Europe and the Premier League this season.
