Rotherham v Southend Betting Tips and Odds

In our Rotherham v Southend betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Paul Warne’s Rotherham United welcome Southend United to the New York Stadium looking to pick up their first league victory of the season. It’s been a torrid few seasons for The Millers which finally resulted in them suffering relegation in May. They had a disappointing return to the third tier last weekend when they went down to Fleetwood and they’ll need to improve here against a very good Southend side. The visitors come into this one on the back of a magnificent 16/17 which almost saw them surprise everyone and break into the play-offs. They finished in seventh position and the aim for Phil Brown’s men is to go one better this time round.

Paul Warne will be eager for his side to get their first three points of the season here

New York Stadium hosts League One football the first time in three years

It’s been a difficult last couple of seasons for Rotherham United but their supporters will be hoping that following relegation the only way is up. The Millers aren’t considered as one of the favourites to win promotion up into the Championship but they do have a fair bit of quality in their ranks and on their day they’ll be a match for anyone. Manger Paul Warne is in the market for new additions and he’s expected to add a few new faces before the window slams shut at the end of the month. In the meantime he has a job to do on the pitch and it’s been a mixed start to the campaign for his side, winning and losing once from their opening two games.

They got their league campaign underway at Fleetwood in what looked a difficult game on paper, and thats exactly what it was. The hosts outplayed The Millers who looked lost at times, with the score eventually finishing at 2-0. New Cod Army signing Conor McAleny did the damage for Town and it could’ve been more, but Rotherham didn’t let it drag them down in midweek when they took on Football League new boys Lincoln City at the New York Stadium. It looked like a potential banana skin on paper and they almost had to settle for extra time if it wasn’t for a late Anthony Forde effort on 78 minutes. They ended up going through into the second round after winning 2-1 and it would’ve done their confidence the world of good coming into this one.

Southend looking to build on fantastic opening day

Last season saw Southend United make some fantastic progress under Phil Brown and they’ll be hoping it was just the start of something. The Shrimps almost broke into the play-offs on the final day of the season, only to be denied by Millwall who went on to win promotion at Wembley. The aim is to go one better this time round and they’re looking in extremely good shape after picking up a huge result on the opening day. They welcomed title favourites Blackburn to Roots Hall in what looked a very difficult game on paper, but they produced a confident display to roll out 2-1 winners and strike an early psychological blow to a potential promotion rival.

Ryan Leonard and new signing Michael Kightly were the heroes on that day and it was the perfect way to kick off the season, but things didn’t run as smoothly in midweek. They fielded a rotated side in the EFL Cup first round against Newport County and were punished 2-0 by the League Two outfit. Two goals in six minutes did the damaged for Mike Flynn’s men and despite the cup not being United’s priority, it would’ve been a blow to them. Now they have the opportunity to bounce back and with their big hitters returning to the starting line up they’ll have a great chance. The Shrimps are generally stronger at home so we’re expecting them to find it difficult at the New York Stadium, with a draw looking like a good potential bet.
