Scunthorpe v Rotherham Betting Tips & Odds

In our Scunthorpe v Rotherham betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

With the League One season over a lot of teams have already began to think about the next, but Scunthorpe and Rotherham are still battling it out for promotion via the playoffs. Wigan and Blackburn have both gained automatic promotion back to the Championship and the winner of this year’s playoffs will determine who will join them. Scunthorpe were in this position last season but fell at the first hurdle, losing to eventually winners Millwall. Rotherham are looking to join the already promoted teams to make it three out of three of the teams to be relegated last season to bounce straight back up. This first leg is expect to be tight with both teams in good form.

Rotherham manager Paul Warne will hope his side can gain promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking

Scunthorpe unbeaten in eight

Scunthorpe didn’t look like making the playoffs with a poor run towards the end of the season. They went thirteen games with only one win and were in danger of missing out. This run prompted the sacking of Graham Alexander and Nick Daws was given the job until the end of the season. Since Daws has taken over they’re yet to lose a game and is making a good claim to get the permeant job. With the good work the team did earlier in the season and this eight game unbeaten run at the end of it Scunthorpe have managed to secure a playoff place. Coming into this tie as the in-form team they will fancy their chances against any of their fellow playoff rivals. After failure in the playoffs last season the team will be determined to go all the way this time around.

Under Nick Daws Scunthorpe have been defensively strong. The recruitment of former Bradford player, Rory McArdle, has been key to this. McArdle moved to Scunthorpe because of their ambition. Scunthorpe have kept four clean sheets in their last five games, they’ve made themselves very hard to break down and have been lethal on the counter attack. The pace of Duane Holmes has cause teams problems all season and since the resigning of Newcastle loanee Ivan Toney Scunthorpe have looked dangerous. Toney has scored eight goals since rejoining the club in January, with three in his last four he’s in good form and could be the difference here in what is expected to be a tight first leg.

Scunthorpe are the form team going into the playoffs

Rotherham looking to bounce straight back

After a disastrous season last year which saw Rotherham pick up only twenty-three points and were ultimately relegated from the Championship. After such a poor season it wouldn’t have been  surprising if Rotherham had a mediocre 17/18, as they re-built their squad for a challenge at promotion with some good teams in League One. However, Paul Warne has done well this season and they finished a comfortable fourth. A run over the Christmas period put them in this good position going unbeaten for fourteen games winning eleven of them. They’ve also finished off the season well with three wins in their last four, keeping three clean sheets in that time.

Rotherham will be confident coming into this game having done the League double over Scunthorpe. Beating the Iron 2-0 at home and 2-1 in the away fixture. Rotherham have been strong at home all season and will be hoping to take an advantage back to the New York Stadium. Having only lost their once since the middle of December they’ll remain confident what ever the result of this first leg. Away from home they’ve struggled for goals, but they’re a good footballing side and will try to work themselves into good opportunities whilst being aware not to be caught on the break. This game features two teams that are very capable at defending and we could see few chances for either team.
