Juventus v Atalanta – 03/12/16

On Saturday evening in Serie A, we see Massimiliano Allegri play host, as his Juventus side play Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta in an evening fixture at Juventus Stadium.

Home side Juventus have been as impressive as ever, with eleven wins from fourteen fixtures in Serie A. They’re in unfamiliar territory against Atalanta though, as they will be looking to bounce back from a shock 3-1 defeat to tenth place Genoa last Sunday. Most of their games have seen their usually pleasing style of football, coming away with wins against most sides. Their defeat to Genoa is the worst of the season, coming after their games against both Milan sides, where Inter Milan defeating them 2-1 in September and local-rival AC Milan beat Juventus 1-0 in October. The Champions League hasn’t seen The Old Lady enjoying a perfect run of games either, with two dull draws against La Liga side Sevilla and Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais. It’s not had a serious impact on their campaign in Group H, as they’re still top of the group, but it shows some kinks in the side’s armour, which Massimiliano Allegri is sure to be aiming to fix.

Their last game had them playing at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, which shouldn’t have frightened a team the size of Juventus, but appeared to from how it played out. The first goal was scored by Giovanni Simeone, son of Atletico Madrid boss Diego. It only came about after defender Leonardo Bonucci took a poor touch, gifting it to the striker. A cross from Darko Lazovic then once again met Simeone, which he instantly headed past Gianluigi Buffon, putting Genoa 2-0 ahead after just thirteen minutes. The threat of Genoa’s surprising attack overwhelmed Juve once again, as left-back Alex Sandro netted an own goal, prompting his side to regroup for a serious reevaluation at half-time. Allegri’s side were unable to take much from the game, eventually only being capable of sealing a consolation through Miralem Pjanic in the 82nd minute.

Following a reasonable thirteenth place finish in Serie A last season, Atalanta came into the current season with a new manager and high aspirations. Gian Piero Gasperini has been working wonders with The Goddess and currently has them at an incredible fifth place position in the table, winning nine and drawing one of their opening thirteen league games. 19-year-old midfielder Franck Kessie has been an important player for the side, netting five times as well as helping his team to an assist. Jasmin Kurtic also has five goals, with additional support from Alejandro Gomez, Andrea Masiello and former AC Milan striker Andrea Petagna, who have a combined nine goals and five assists this season.

Atalanta played eighteenth place Pescara in their last game, which was a crucial Copa Italia fixture. They were expected to easily defeat Massimo Oddo’s side due to their poor league position and wavering form. It was as expected for Gasperini’s side too, Cristian Raimondi, Alberto Grassi and Aleksandar Pesic all scoring, finishing the game as a big 3-0 victory and keeping an impressive clean sheet against a side who are doing all they can to grab some wins and build up their confidence.

Lazio v Roma – 04/12/16

It’s the big Derby della Capitale on Sunday, as Luciano Spalletti’s Roma play Simone Inzaghi’s Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico, which both teams famously share.

It’s been a strange season for Lazio, considering how the club appointed former Marseille head coach Marcelo Bielsa in the summer, only to see him leave his position for unknown reason after just two days. Things appeared to work out for the best as Simone Inzaghi, who did a fine job as caretaker manager last season, took over immediately and pushed the side to fourth in the table. They now have eight wins and four draws from fourteen Serie A fixtures. Some of their success has to be put down to the clever signing of striker Ciro Immobile in the summer, who had previously been a prolific forward for Torino, before having some unsuccessful stints at Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla. He’s scored nine goals this season and has been so good that he now plays for the Italian National Team once again.

Playing bottom-place Palermo in their last game, it was surprising that Ciro Immobile didn’t get on the scoresheet once again, bursting through his opposition’s defence with a thirst for goal. They were still able to take three points from the struggling side though, as a pass Dusan Basta at the right side of the penalty met Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who impressively passed the ball past Josip Posavec.

Out of all teams in Italy, Roma have looked the most likely to stand any chance of toppling Juventus off the top spot. They have had some setbacks though, losing to Atalanta, Torino and Fiorentina as well as drawing to Cagliari and Empoli. Napoli were a team who had several opportunities to push Roma down to third in the table but couldn’t hold their own and have since fallen seventh. Luciano Spalletti’s side haven’t had so much luck in Europe, as they were knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers to Porto over two legs, suffering a three goal deficit and two straight reds in one of the fixtures. Their campaign in the Europa League has been far more successful and they have hopes of continuing far into the tournament.

Roma have had a few key performers this season, with Mohamed Salah and Diego Perotti scoring a combined thirteen goals and eight assists together. None come as important in the team as former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko though, who’s scored twelve league goals and has been prolific, always ready at the opposition goal for another opportunity to put his side in front. They played eighteenth place Pescara in their last game, where despite the struggling side’s efforts to take a draw, Edin Dzeko’s brace over the opening ten minutes was simply too much to react to, resulting the game as a narrow 3-2 win.
