As with the last six years, Juventus will go into the 2017/18 season as clear favourites, still full of excitement from another fantastic campaign, which also saw them making a Champions League final appearance against Real Madrid. Despite missing out against the regular European giant, Massimiliano Allegri’s side will happily take second place knowing full well that they currently reign over Italy.

The Serie A has been disputed over recent years through the gradual downward spiral suffered by Inter Milan and AC Milan primarily, but both teams have been handed some significant investment and their summer signings only point towards this next season finally being their massive comeback. The San Siro is set to be home to some more exciting displays from both its inhabitants, as the rivalling teams are spending big to get back on track as two of Europe’s most dangerous clubs.

Roma and Napoli kept hot on the tail of Juventus in the 2016/17 season, so this could finally be their opportunity to topple The Old Lady off their perch, making it an enticing league to keep an eye on in the coming months. Luciano Spalletti departed Roma after frustrations over his feud with the outgoing Francesco Totti, where he now leads out Inter Milan, making for an interesting encounter when the two lock horns. Maurizio Sarri keeps his place in charge of Napoli, holding on to key-men Dries Mertens, Lorenzo Insigne and Jose Callejon to bolster their chances of moving higher than third. They aren’t the only exciting prospect either, as Lazio and Atalanta earned a top six finish after going through some sensational performances.

A wealth of talent is spreading through the league, with the selection of strikers paying homage to Alessandro Del Piero, Antonio Di Natale, Hernan Crespo, Filippo Inzaghi and the long list of others who led the way in years gone by. Former Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain is the league’s superstar after his record transfer move before the start of last season. Golden Boot winner Edin Dzeko is proving himself as being talented enough to fill the big boots of Francesco Totti as Roma’s main striker. There’s also the next generation, which include clinical Torino finisher Andrea Belotti, heralded ‘next Lionel Messi’ Paulo Dybala, and controversial Inter Milan number nine Mauro Icardi.

It’s not to say that there isn’t quality in other areas of the available players in the Serie A either, as Gianluigi Donnarumma is something of a rising star between the sticks for AC Milan, and Gianluigi Buffon is likely to play out his final season as Juventus’ number one. In defence, Leonardo Bonucci has turned down plenty of offers so he could continue pulling on the famed black and white jersey of Juventus, helped by in-demand Brazilian left-back Alex Sandro. As for midfield, Roma have the fierce duo of Radja Nainggolan and Daniele De Rossi, while Marek Hamsik goes into his tenth year as a catalyst behind Napoli’s deadly attacking figures.

Italy’s top tier took a damaging blow a few years back but it’s finally starting to show the same sort of quality that made it so popular in the nineties. The last campaign saw an injection of funding to some of the faltering sides, while plenty of fresh talent has seen the Serie A rejuvenated, from what was a major league in a downward slump.
