Sir Alex Ferguson’s Top 5 Moments

Legendary former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson kicking a boot into the face of David Beckham will forever go down as one of the most talked about incidents in changing room bust-up’s. The bizarre situation, which occurred following United’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup, left one of the most famous players in footballing history with a deep cut above his left eye back in 2003. This of course got everyone talking, it was a journalists dream and before long the story was plastered all over the front pages. This Friday marks the 15th anniversary of that fateful incident in the United dressing room, so in tribute we thought we’d take a trip down memory lane and re-visit some of Fergie’s most memorable moments in the Old Trafford hot seat.

5. That quote on Gary Neville

When Fergie speaks, you tend to listen. A man of wisdom and knowledge, he’s seen all there is to see in the game and that’s what made him arguably the best football manager that’s ever lived. The former United boss provided us with some great witty quotes over the years, showing everyone that he’s not always the stern, straight talking hardened Scotsman we all became so accustomed with. Whether it be winding up other managers or simply having a slight dig at his own players, Ferguson frequently got people laughing. This quote on Gary Neville is by far our favourite though: “If he was an inch taller he’d be the best centre-half in Britain. His father is 6ft 2in – I’d check the milkman.”

 4. The Hairdryer Treatment

Sir Alex Ferguson’s famous hairdryer treatment on players underperforming will always be remembered. The unorthodox method was used by Fergie, usually at half-time when his players weren’t doing their jobs correctly. Players like Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Juan Sebastian Veron and Roy Keane have all talked about their own personal experiences of the hairdryer treatment in years gone by, with it often working to positive effect to spur a comeback in a game that looked all but lost. For those that don’t know, the hairdryer treatment basically involved Fergie screaming into the face of whoever he was annoyed at, sometimes even producing spit through pure rage. Since retirement, he has come out and said that he only properly used the hairdryer treatment about half-a-dozen times throughout his career; but if you believe that then you’ll believe anything.

3. The Beckham Boot incident

As mentioned earlier, the Beckham boot incident will always be remembered when discussing Fergie’s career. In a flurry of rage following United’s 2-0 defeat at home to Arsenal in the FA Cup in 2003, Ferguson singled out Beckham’s performance in his post-match dressing down. With rumours of Beckham on his way to Real Madrid, Fergie felt as though the England wide-man had lost his desire and simply gave up in the latter stages of the game. ”He was around 12 feet from me. Between us on the floor lay a row of boots. David swore. I moved towards him, and as I approached I kicked a boot. It hit him right above the eye. Of course he rose to have a go at me and the players stopped him. ‘Sit down,’ I said. ‘You’ve let your team down. You can argue as much as you like.'” With Beckham arising a day later with a cut just above his left eye, the media went crazy. News of the spat spread like wildfire in the days to follow, and that summer Beckham joined Real Madrid for €35 million. The pair remain lifelong friends however, with both parties of course now seeing the funny side of the situation.

2. The balloon

Potentially one of the funniest things to come out of a dugout, Alex Ferguson quite literally sh*tting himself when his assistant manager at the time – Mike Phelan decided to pop a balloon without any prior warning. On a hot summers day in West London, where Manchester United were playing out a 1-1 draw with Chelsea, Phelan picked up a stray balloon floating around the dugout and stamped on it – of course causing a loud, unexpected bang in the process. Fergie, a renowned hard man in the world of football management quite simply lost it. Instead of reacting in a normal way and having a chuckle over it, he instead decided to launch a tirade of abuse at his number two. Phelan has since revealed that he was almost sacked over this harmless incident, but now looks back on it as nothing but a hilarious story to tell. This will never fail to bring a smile to our faces!

1. Silverware

Top of Sir Alex Ferguson’s list of achievements has to be his undisputed success as United boss though. No manager has ever won more silverware at a single club than Fergie; throughout his time at Old Trafford he clinched 5 FA Cups, 4 League Cups, 2 Champions League’s & an astonishing 13 Premier League titles, among many other trophies. What he achieved at United will never be repeated and that’s what made him such a special manager. From the astute signings he made, to the many controversies he endured in the hot seat, there’s no doubting that he is one of, if not the greatest manager of all time. Ferguson’s departure from United back in 2013 was among the saddest days in history for Red Devils fans all over the world, with the club seemingly finding it impossible to replace him in the dugout. Football fans will be forever grateful for the positive influence Sir Alex Ferguson had on the game throughout his illustrious career, and one thing’s for certain – he’ll never be forgotten.
