Sunderland v Stoke City Betting Preview – 14/1/17

In our Sunderland v Stoke City betting preview we look at the best possible betting tips between the two sides.

On Saturday afternoon this weekend in the Premier League we see Mark Hughes take his Stoke City side on the trip to the Stadium of Light to face David Moyes’ Sunderland. Both teams will fancy themselves to come away with all three points in this one. These two met in the reverse fixture back in October when Sunderland travelled to the bet365 Stadium. Two goals in the first half from Joe Allen was enough to secure a pretty comfortable 2-0 win for the Potters. He put them ahead with a header after just eight minutes and then doubled their advantage in stoppage time with a strike from the edge of the area through a crowd of players. The Black Cats had their keeper Jordan Pickford to thank for keeping it to just 2-0.

The home side Sunderland head into the visit of Stoke City hoping that their much improved home form can continue here on Saturday and they can come away with what would be a huge three points. After nightmare start to the season which saw them look like relegation certainties, Sunderland have picked up recently and are now just one point away from safety. They currently find themselves sat in the top spot of the drop zone in 18th place, with Crystal Palace just a point above them in 17th. On the other hand both teams below them are just a win away from overtaking them. Their form on the road has been dreadful, however at the Stadium of Light they’ve now lost just once in their last six in all competitions, with that defeat coming to league leaders Chelsea. They have their star player and top scorer Jermaine Defoe to thank for their improvement in form, he has 11 goals to his name so far this season. Their has been some interest in him in this window, especially from West Ham who put in a practically embarrassing £6m bid for him, which was of course rejected.

On Saturday afternoon they welcomed Sean Dyche’s Burnley to the Stadium of Light in an all Premier League FA Cup third round affair. This one will go to a replay after they played out a dire goalless draw in front of under 18,000 fans. The visitors had the better of the chances and almost won it when James Tarkowski struck the post with a header, but neither side could break the deadlock. The winner of the replay have been rewarded with a home tie against the winner of Bristol City v Fleetwood Town.

The away side Stoke City go into the trip to Sunderland hoping that they can put an end to their three straight away defeats with a win here. Its been a tough few weeks on the road for the Potters who’s last three away ties have been trips to the Emirates, Anfield and more recently Chelsea which has seen them pick up zero points. They will know that this is very winnable tie and will be desperate to come away with all three points. They currently find themselves sat in 11th place in the table, level on points with Southampton in 10th and one point behind Bournemouth in 9th. They’ve won just once in their last seven in all competitions, a run which Mark Hughes will be far from pleased with. The problem they have is that they are lacking a goalscorer, their top scorer is midfielder Joe Allen who has five goals to his name, with none of their strikers having found the net more than twice. This week they’ve been linked with a move for Saido Berahino in a bid to end their misery up front.

On Saturday afternoon this weekend they welcomed Paul Lambert’s Championship Wolverhampton Wanderers to the bet365 Stadium in the third round of the FA Cup. The second tier outfit took the lead on the half hour mark when Helder Costa’s hammered his shot past Lee Grant at his near post. Wolves secured their win with just ten minutes to play curtesy of a stunning free kick from Matt Doherty into the top left corner. This earned them a trip to the winner of Liverpool v Plymouth in the fourth round.
