TeamFA Team of the Week – 20/03/17
TeamFA TOTW: Lukaku, Wood, Dawson…
GK: Ali Al-Habsi (Reading)
Reading faced Sheffield Wednesday in a huge match at the top of the Championship on Friday night. It was fifth against sixth, with the winner set to solidify their position in the play-offs. It was Reading who did so, winning 2-0 at Hillsborough and they had Ali Al-Habsi to thank. The former Wigan goalkeeper was in inspired form, saving several shots from the likes of Jordan Rhodes and Will Buckley to ensure a clean sheet and three points.
CB: Mathieu Baudry (Doncaster Rovers)
Mathieu Baudry now of Doncaster Rovers faced his former club Leyton Orient at the weekend as top of League Two faced bottom. Predictably, top came out as winners with Rovers claiming a resounding 4-1 success at the Matchroom Stadium. Baudry managed to come back and haunt his former side, volleying home brilliantly from Gary McSheffrey’s corner.
CB: Craig Dawson (West Bromwich Albion)
West Brom produced a solid display at the Hawthorns in Saturday’s early kick-off, beating Arsenal 3-1. The Baggies were the better team throughout and made set pieces count to exploit Arsenal’s defensive frailties. Craig Dawson was the main beneficiary, he scored two headed goals from corners to win the match for the Baggies. The defender was also solid in his defensive duties, stifling the Gunners attack.
CB: Aden Flint (Bristol City)
It was a shock result at Ashton Gate on Friday night as struggling Bristol City stunned promotion chasing Huddersfield Town. The Robins beat the Terriers 4-0, a result which significantly boosts their hopes of avoiding relegation. Amongst the goal scorers for City was centre-back Aden Flint, who scored with a wonderful flicked finish to effectively kill the game off at 3-0. He was also instrumental at the back ensuring the team sitting in third place couldn’t break down the Robins.
RM: Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (Rochdale)
Rochdale managed to end a 10-match winless run when they hammered Gillingham 4-1 at Spotland. The key man for Dale in their victory was right winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing who caused the Gills defence all sorts of problems all afternoon. He netted the opening goal after just 10 minutes, celebrating by lifting Jordan Thompson’s shirt with his team mates in support of his battle with cancer. He then went on to flick the ball on for Ian Henderson’s goal as well as setting up Callum Camps after counter attacking with pace.
CM: Filipe Morais (Bolton Wanderers)
Bolton are in great form at the moment, but had to work hard to claim a 2-1 victory over Northampton Town at the Macron Stadium. The Trotters fell behind before levelling with 15 minutes to go. Then the in-form Filipe Morais slid in at the back post to get on the end of an Andrew Taylor centre and give his side three vital points in the race for automatic promotion, sending them second in the table.
CM: Graham Carey (Plymouth Argyle)
Plymouth Argyle edged closer to promotion from League Two with a narrow 1-0 win over Morecambe at the weekend. The goal scorer for the Pilgrims was their best player from this season, Graham Carey. The central midfielder curled in a brilliant shot from 20 yards out after 17 minutes and it proved to be the match winner. Watch his strike below:
LM: Sergi Canos (Brentford)
Brentford produced an inspired comeback against Burton Albion on Saturday, turning a 3-1 half-time deficit on its head to claim a 5-3 victory at the Pirelli Stadium. Jota and Lasse Vibe were both key to the victory, but we’ve picked Sergi Canos for our team. The Liverpool loanee netted twice against the Brewers, with his second being the crucial equaliser for the Bees on the hour mark, giving them plenty of time to go on and claim victory.
ST: Romelu Lukaku (Everton)
Despite all the speculation about his future, Romelu Lukaku still produced a top class performance in Everton’s victory over Hull City. The Toffees won the match 4-0, with Lukaku setting one up before netting two goals of his own. Both came late on in the 91st and 94th minute and it took his seasons tally to 22, highlighting just how important he is to Everton.
ST: Chris Wood (Leeds United)
Leeds United claimed a huge 2-0 victory against Brighton and Hove Albion in the race for promotion in the Championship, with Chris Wood being the match winner. The New Zealand international striker bagged both goals for Leeds, taking his seasons tally to a very impressive 27. Both goals came in the second period, the first was a looping header just after the hour before he held his nerve from the penalty spot to finish the job.
ST: Benik Afobe (AFC Bournemouth)
AFC Bournemouth are starting to drag themselves away from trouble in the Premier League and they boosted their survival chances with another victory at the weekend. The Cherries beat fellow strugglers Swansea City 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium with Benik Afobe involved in both goals. The former Arsenal man forced an opener when his shot deflected off Alfie Mawson, before getting his name on the scoresheet in the second half thanks to a clinical finish in the second period. He’s certainly proving his worth in the absence of Callum Wilson.
Manager: Darren Sarll (Stevenage)
One of the standout results of the weekend came in League Two where Stevenage thumped fellow promotion hopefuls Portsmouth. Both sides went into the match with good form, but it was Boro who continued it by claiming a big 3-0 win. It was a result which drags them into contention for automatic promotion, they now sit just four points behind Pompey which highlights just how significant a victory it was.
