Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea Betting Preview – 04/01/17

In our Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Two of the Premier Leagues form sides go head to head at White Hart Lane on Wednesday evening as Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea face off in a London derby. Both sides have been playing some excellent stuff of late and confidence in both camps will be sky high. Tottenham produced arguably their best display of the season in their last encounter against Watford, claiming a resounding 4-1 victory at Vicarage Road. Chelsea meanwhile were given a major test of their title credentials by Stoke City on New Years Eve, but came through it unscathed with a 4-2 win.

Tottenham looked excellent on New Years Day against Watford and they are beginning to gain some momentum. Mauricio Pochettino’s men looked at their fluent best going forward, whilst remaining solid at the back throughout. Harry Kane and Dele Alli were the match winners for Spurs with both players bagging a brace each whilst Kieran Trippier was also impressive, taking his chance in the absence of Kyle Walker by laying on two assists. Spurs are in great form at the moment and come into this game having won their last four Premier League outings, a run which had seen them climb back into the top four until Manchester City’s win on Monday afternoon. They know however that victory in this match will see them back in the Champions League places which gives them an extra incentive, not that they need any against their local rivals.

As already mentioned Alli was heavily involved in their last outing scoring two goals and he has now managed to score six times in his last six appearances. The England international midfielder had a slow start to this campaign after a stellar 2015/16 season in which he scored 10 goals and laid on 12 assists. But he is now starting to look back to his best, combining with Kane to devastating effect which was a key factor in Tottenham’s title challenge last term. If those two can continue to perform to the standard they have been in recent weeks, you wouldn’t back against Spurs continuing to close the gap on their rivals at the top.

Chelsea continued their excellent winning record against Stoke City, but they were made to work for the three points at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have been extremely difficult to score against, keeping eight clean sheets in 10 matches but the Potters managed to breach their backline twice. However it wasn’t enough with Chelsea having that bit more of an edge going forward and the West Londoners secured a 4-2 win to take their winning streak to 13 matches.

Diego Costa scored his customary goal against Stoke to take his seasons tally to 14. He had missed their Boxing Day fixture against Bournemouth but came straight back into the side on Saturday and showed just how sharp he is at the moment by hitting a bullet past Lee Grant. But it was another Blues player who took the headlines from that match. Willian has had to settle for a place on the bench in recent weeks due to the form of Victor Moses and Pedro, but he was handed a start against Stoke due to Pedro’s suspension and took full advantage bagging himself a brace. The Brazilian was one bright spark in a poor season last year and has shown again of late what he can offer the Chelsea team. Having players such as him who can come into the first team despite not being a regular shows just how strong the Blues squad is, Conte has a decision whether to continue with Willian or re-instate Pedro who was a scorer for them on Boxing Day.

This will be an intriguing match between two form teams in the Premier League. Everyone has lost to Chelsea in recent months, including Spurs in a 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge but it was they who arguably gave them their biggest test in this run. If they can re-create their first half performance from that match and sustain it for the full 90 minutes they are more than capable of halting the Blues winning streak. Spurs have yet to be beaten at White Hart Lane this season which will also give them confidence and is why we think that they will take a point from this game. We expect it to be an entertaining encounter with plenty of goals so backing both teams to score looks a good bet at 7/10. Alli and Costa are both in excellent goalscoring form at the moment and a 7/1 anytime scorer double on them looks great value with William Hill.
